IPL9 - Mumbai beat Kolkata - Pollard hits an unbeaten 50 in just 17 balls

It was yet another exciting T20 match at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai when the home team beat Kolkata Knight Riders by 6 wickets with 2 overs to spare. Keiron Pollard hit the third fastest IPL fifty, off just 17 balls, while Mumbai captain Rohit Sharma carried his bat through the innings. Thus, Mumbai Indians successfully chased down the 175-run target set by the Kolkata Knight Riders in the 24th match of IPL9.

Mumbai won the toss and sent in KKR to bat first. Its captain Gautam Gambhir scored third fifty of the season and put on 69 runs for the opening wicket with Robin Uthappa to help KKR post a competitive 174/5.
However, it was not enough when there are hard hitters like Keiron Pollard in the MI team. He hit six huge sixes and two fours to score an unbeaten 51 off just 17 balls. Rohit Sharma playe through the innings to remain not out on 68 off 49 balls, which included two sixes and eight fours.
The two of them added 72 runs for the fifth wicket in just five overs as they finished off with six wickets and two overs to spare.
Rohit Sharma was adjudged the Man of the Match.

IPL9 - Mumbai Indians beat Kolkata Knight Riders on their home ground

Batting first Kolkata Knight Riders managed to post a score of 187 for five at the Eden Gardens with half centuries from skipper Gautam Gambhir and Manish Pandey. Gambhir made 64 from 52 balls (4x4, 1x6) and he got ample support from Manish Pandey who scored a rollicking 52 from 29 balls - the duo had a 100-run partnership from just 60 balls. At 163 for 2 in 17 overs and Andre Russell in imperious form, it appeared that KKR was set for a 200-plus total, but the sudden loss of three quick wickets made them lose the plot.

It was a tough target and Mumbai Indians started off on a positive note with the opening pair of Rohit Sharma and Parthiv Patel putting on 53 in 5.5 overs. Finally, skipper Rohit Sharma scored a sparkling 84 (10X4, 2X6) to help his team win their first match of IPL9 by six wickets. He was given ample support by Jos Buttler who made the chase look easier by hitting 41 runs in off just 22 balls so that Mumbai Indians could end up on the winning side with five balls to spare.

Obviously, Manish Pandey has proved that he can play a stellar role and, since he came into the team due to injures to Ajinkya Rahane, it remains to be seen how Manish would be accommodated.

Rohit Sharma's eighth ton in ODIs went in vain.
AB de Villiers scored an unbeaten 104 off 73 balls and was named the Man of the Match.
The 303 scored by South Africa was the highest score at this venue – it surpassed 294 made by the hosts in 2007.

With two runouts of Rohit Sharma (22) and Virat Kohli (1) and inability to open accounts by Ambati Rayudu, Harbhajan Singh Bhibaneshwar Kumar and Mohit Sharma, it was a miserable showing by a team known for its brilliant batting power.
It all came to naught and, understandably, the huge crowd at the Barabtri Stadium was disappointed – and, they expressed their anger by throwing bottles on the field.

Off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin (3-24) was the only wicket taker and he tried his best to defend a low score, but such a low score is difficult to defend.

Test skipper Hashim Amla (36) and ODI skipper de Villiers laid the foundation of the win with their 77-run opening stand and then Duminy took over to guide the visitors to the finish line. His 68 runs was scored off just 34 balls and it was his 105-run unbeaten partnership for the fourth wicket with Farhaan Behardien (32 not out) that sealed the game in their favor.

Batting first, the young team of Bangladesh began attack from the very first ball and left the Indian bowlers clueless on how to control the flow of runs. The Bangladesh batsmen treated the Indian bowlers with disdain and belted them to all corners of the stadium. Ravichandra Ashwin managed to bag three wickets but Umesh Yadav came in for plenty of punishment.
Anyway, the way Bangladesh was playing, at one point of time it appeared that they would post around 350 runs – but, finally, it was 307 and it was a formidable one as it turned out when the Indians took the field.
The bowling of the home team was superb as was their fielding and they gave nothing away. The Indians had to grovel for runs and it played in their nerves. Rohit Sharma was the highest scorer – he scored 63 runs. Apart from him, others who reached double figures were Shikhar Dhawan (30), Suresh Raina (40), Ravindra Jadeja (32). Bhubaneshwar Kumar (25) and Mohit Sharma(11).
Obviously, the Bangladesh team has matured and Indians cannot take them lightly. They had done their homework while Indians were overconfident. The reason of why M S Dhoni chose to field first after winning the toss will never be known – it was a good batting track and was loaded with runs. But, Dhoni allowed Rohit Sharma to bat first and gifted the game away, literally.
MI hit 12 sixes (Lendl Simmons, Keiron Pollard and Ambati Rayudu hit three sixes each, Rohit Sharma hit two and Harbhajan Singh hit one) while CSK could manage to hit only 4 (Dwayne Smith, Dwayne Bravo, Suresh Raina and M S Dhoni hit one each).
The CSK bowlers were clobbered all over the field and Dhoni rued his decision. It was most unlike him because he is known to be able to judge the playing conditions fairly well. Moreover, in view of the not too good form of Mike Hussey (played only 9 balls to score 4 runs) and Pawan Negi (went for 18 runs in 2 overs and scored only 4 runs), Dhoni could have changed the team composition.
But, that is neither here nor there – the fact remains that CSK lost.
The Man of the Match award went to Rohit Sharma for his 23 ball 50.

He, along with his skipper J P Duminy helped his team to post a formidable score of 190 in front of the visiting Mumbai Indians at Feroze Shah Kotla grounds in Delhi. Yuvraj Singh gave another flop show – he scored only 2 runs.

Their combined strength paved the way for Delhi Daredevils to register their third victory of the season by beating Mumbai Indians by 37 runs.
Imran Tahir captured 3 wickets for 22 runs and Shreyas Iyer was declared the Man of the Match.
Mumbai Indians had won the toss and sent in the home team to bat first but had not expected to see the way runs kept coming. Faced with a stiff target, Mumbai Indians did not really get off to a rollicking start. By the 11th over they were down to 82 for 4. Once Rohit Sharma fell with the score at 131, others followed in quick succession. Even Harbhajan Singh, a savior at times, did not click.
With this win, DD moves up the points table to No 4 while MI languishes at the bottom of the rung.

This win came after four defeats and was a result of a dedicated approach to the game and posting an impressive total of 200 plus for the opposition.

RCB won the toss and sent in MI to bat first. Opening the MI innings, Lendl Simmons made 59 off 44 balls with the help of nine boundaries and two sixes, and Unmukt Chand smashed his way to 58 off just 37 balls which included eight fours and two hits over the fence.
Then skipper Rohit Sharma contributed with a 15-ball 42-run cameo to help Mumbai's cause. He hit three fours and four huge sixes. And, towards the end, young Hardik Pandya played an unbeaten 16 runs off just six deliveries for Mumbai. The final total of 209 was too much for RCB and, with Chris Gayle and Virat Kohli failing to deliver, the RCB had to face defeat on home ground.
Harbhajan Singh took 3 wickets for 27 runs was the Man of the Match.

The Mumbai Indians had posted a score of 164 thanks to some hard hitting by Kieron Pollard but the Rajasthan Royals chased it down in the 20th over with 5 balls to spare as reported in zeenews.india.com dated 15 April 2015.

Obviously, the decision to bat first did not pay dividends for MI as they struggled to score only 45 runs in the first 10 overs – captain Rohit Sharma went out for a zero. Subsequently, a century-plus stand between Kieron Pollard (70 off 34 balls) and Corey Anderson (50 off 38 balls) helped the team to put up a respectable 164 for five.
The score appeared to be chicken feed for the RR and Captain Steve Smith scored an unbeaten 79 from 53 balls and he had for company Ajinkya Rahane (46) as they raised a 64-run stand for the second wicket.
It is obvious that in spite of having big names of cricket associated with the team in the form of mentor and coaches, Mumbai Indians are struggling to come to terms with the reality of T20 cricket and finding the winning combination.

Losing the toss and sent in to bat by Gautam Gambhir, the captain of Mumbai Indians scored 98 not out at the Eden Gardens that was crowded to capacity with the score at 168 for 3. They were 37 for 3 at one stage and the final score appeared to be a fairly good one. However, the home team had enough batting power to overhaul the score with some balls to spare.
For the KKR, Captain Gautam Gambhir scored a half-century. They lost Robin Uthappa (9) early in the third over but, then, Gambhir and Manish Pandey added 85 runs for the second wicket. It was a convincing win and the men in blue have shown that the venue or country where the game is played is immaterial – it is the supremacy that matters. Winning is the bottom line and a determination to retain the Cricket World Cup that it had won in 2011. We won’t give it back!!
Ireland put up 259 runs and, at one time, it was presumed that they would go past 300 when the two Irish openers William Porterfield (67) and Paul Stirling (42) took their team off to a flier. With the fabled batting lineup that India boasts of, a total of over 300 was on the cards but, they struggled to post 267 for the loss of 8 wickets – and it was chickenfeed for the home team.
The devastating spell of Mitchell Starc who bagged 6 of the wickets for 43 runs allowed Australia to win by 4 wickets with six balls left.
Rohit Sharna did score a century and Raina chipped in with another 50 plus, but the failures of Shikhar Dhawan (who perished in his famous chasing the balls outside the off stump) and that of Virat Kohli plus that of captain M S Dhoni added to India’s batting woes.
And – to cap the miseries, the Indian pace battery failed to make any impression – neither did the spinners. All in all, Indians were outplayed in all departments and Australia won its match with ease at the Melbourne Cricket Ground in the Carlton-Mid triseries.
Let us hope the Indians regain their form and, with hardly one month for the 2015 Cricket World Cup to begin, the captain should try to ensure that only the best payers get selected. Past performances are no guarantee of future glories.
