Ahmedabad wants to set a precedent by creating a SMART police station where the police would be fit, slim and smart. The general trend of tired, overweight policemen and lack of interest in their jobs would soon be a thing of the past. The SMART police station would ensure that its police personnel get nutritious food and at the right time through a canteen at a police station.
This is because unhealthy food or lack of food as a result of irregular working hours put cops at significantly higher health risk than the general population. Hence, Ahmedabad City Police is geared up to make their cops healthy and fit.

The plan is to provide healthy food to the staff - it will include meals, seasonal fruits and juices to meet the nutritional requirements of the cops. Visitors who have to wait at the station for long hours will be provided juice. Cops who have to work for 12 to 13 hours are unable to bring home cooked food, hence the canteen operated by a reputed caterer who will give the meals at subsidised rates.
Moreover, to reduce stress at work, there will be 8-hour duty for cops instead of 12 hours.

Police zero in on illegal hookah bars in Ahmedabad

Police in Ahmedabad have intensified their drive against illegal hookah bars in the city. They have already taken up the task of cancelling licences of six hookah bars in Satellite and Anandnagar areas. This decision was taken because the hookah bars were not following the norms that have been laid down by the judiciary for running such establishments.

The drive by the police was initiated a fortnight ago and has already covered over 20 hookah bars in various western city parts. Non-cognizable offences have been registered against the businesses. The police teams have collected samples from the bars and these have been sent for forensic examination.
As per the existing guidelines - hookah bars should not be more than 20% of the total area of the establishment. The establishment should have licence to run a restaurant or eatery. Moreover, there should be a separate area for smoking and the area should be under CCTV surveillance.
Many of the hookah bars were using tobacco that did not have statutory warning on the packets - this is required according to the rule.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi is on his second visit to Japan and he hopes that the proposed hi-speed rail from Japan will boost bilateral trade and investment. This would be the annual India-Japan bilateral summit.
As he indicated prior to his leaving for Japan, ' ... the high-speed railway cooperation between India and Japan is a shining example of the strength of our cooperation .. it will not only boost our trade and investment ties, but will also create skilled jobs in India, improve our infrastructure and give a boost to our 'Make in India' mission.'

During the visit of Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe to India last year, there were talks on a high speed rail link between Mumbai and Ahmedabad. The plan is to visit the Kawasaki Heavy Industries facility in Kobe, where the high speed railway is manufactured.

There is tension between India and Pakistan and, vegetable traders from Gujarat have decided to stop supply of vegetables, especially tomato and chilli, to Pakistan. This could result in loss of business to the tune of nearly Rs 3 crore to the Gujarat farmers and vegetable traders every day and they are willing to bear the brunt of this decision.

As revealed by Ahmedabad General Commission Agent Association, Gujarat used to send 50 trucks daily having 10 tonnes of vegetables mainly tomatoes and chilli to Pakistan through the Wagah border. However, they have stopped it for the past two days considering the Indo-Pak tension.
This is the first time since 1997 that Gujarat traders have taken a decision to stop supply of essential veggies to Pakistan. The vegetable vendors will have to bear a loss of Rs 3 crore every day, but national interest comes first. Of course, supply of vegetables to Bangladesh, Gulf countries, Canada and South Africa will continue.

Ahmedabad will witness 103 rath yatras - police security goes hi-tech

On Wednesday, Ahmadabad will witness two festivals - one is a Hindu festival namely the second day of the Indian month of Ashadha. The other is the Muslim festival namely Ramzan Eid. The city police have, therefore, made special preparations to oversee the 103 rath yatras and 46 minor shobha yatras in the state.
The entire police machinery will be roped in to cover engaged in this massive exercise which is perceived as the high point of policing during the year.

Ahmedabad is the city where the biggest Rath Yatra of Gujarat is held. And, in order to ensure tight security, the state police have gone high tech. They have installed 300 additional cameras covering the entire route. Of these, 80 are high-resolution ones and those at Shahpur - where the procession reaches in the evening hours - will have night-vision.
Moving cameras near the three chariots will have internet connectivity to enable officers to access their feed through IP addresses. Moreover, in all the major cities, complete routes have been charted with Netra quadracopters of the state police. This has been done to identify obstacles and points from where the procession can be supervised to understand the traffic flow.

Bullet train for the rich and famous - fare will be 1.5-times that of AC 1st class

The bullet train in India would, as it stands,cater to the rich and famous. This is because the tariff proposed by the Ministry of Railways for the upcoming bullet train service between Mumbai and Ahmedabad will be 1.5 times more than the first class AC fare prevailing now.
The present AC 1st class fare by Duronto Express between Mumbai and Ahmedabad is Rs.2,200. Therefore, for the 508-Km run between the two cities via the dedicated, high-speed corridor, the fare will be around Rs.3,300. The fare in Japan for a similar distance is around Rs 8,500. That is the fare in Japan for the 550-Km run between Tokyo and Osaka on the Shinkansen, as the bullet train network there is called.

Moreover, the first phase of the Indian network will have a maximum design speed of 350 km per hour and an operating speed of 320 km per hour and, the ministry expects around 36,000 daily users per day both ways by 2023, going up to 186,000 by 2053.
There would be a total of 12 stations namely, Mumbai, Thane, Virar, Boisar, Vapi, Bilimora, Surat, Bharuch, Vadodara, Anand, Ahmedabad and Sabarmati. The total journey time of the fast train will be 2.07 hours and of trains that will stop at each station will be 2.58 hrs.

Gujarat Police learn the finer points of crime from hardened criminals

Police in Gujarat have decided to follow the famous maxim of 'set a thief to catch a thief'. They have zeroed in on a dreaded gangster, arrested for three murders and umpteen extortion calls to jewellers, and want him to teach them the finer pints of crime. The authorities feel that such criminals can become a source of lessons that cops need to learn in these times of terror threats and heightened security.

It seems the criminal explained to the police and recorded on video of how criminals can conceal no less than six weapons in a car and still escape detection at police checkpoints. The gangster showed how weapons are hidden in a SUV's rear AC vent and even under the leather cover of the gear handle to avoid suspicion. This unique 'learn from criminals' initiative undertaken by Ahmedabad crime branch would bring to light modus operandi of notorious law-breakers - these video-recordings would help train newly inducted police trainees and will also become a continuous learning tool for senior cops. Another criminal who ran an extortion racket from inside Vadodara central jail explained how he sneaked mobile phones into the jail in spite of high security. The police department is also making videos of history-sheeter and burglars who have multiple thefts to their credit like a notorious thief who can steal items from locked cars. The videos reveal how he would break open a car window within seconds by strategically placing a small screwdriver at one end of the glass and giving it a gentle nudge. These are all happening for new police recruits undergoing training at Karai police academy in Gandhinagar.

Kite enthusiasts fly kites in Patna to celebrate Makar Sankranti

It is Makar Sankranti and, on this occasion, kite enthusiasts from Patna assembled at the 62-acre venue of Gandhi Maidan for the festival. There were many middle-aged men, full of enthusiasm, who flew the kites while their families turned into supporters and spectators. Many of them had arrived in their cars, loaded with kites, manjha or thread sharpened with a concoction of powdered glass mixed in glue.

The organizers had invited a team of three expert kite-fliers from Gujarat in order to introduce newbies to the colorful world of kites. Accordingly, the Vibrant Kite Club from Ahmadabad had brought with them 23 kites - right from plain ones to inflatable ones - of made of synthetic cloth.
The biggest one was designed as a komodo dragon and it was nearly 60ft long. Others were in shapes of the cobra, fish, Sponge Bob, tiger and other animals. Principles of aerodynamics are employed while making these kites and their costs span from a few thousand rupees to Rs 2 lakh.
Makar Sankranti is a big festival of Gijaratis but, the Gujarati team did not exhibit their costlier kites because the local fliers constantly maneuvered their kites to attack and cut them.

Navaratri celebrations in Ahmedabad means garba dances when the city and state will swirl to garba tunes till midnight. Shoppers shopped till late night and, in some areas like Law Garden, Dhalgarwad and Nehrunagar there was a rush to buy chaniya cholis and accessories.
The city police officials have revealed that 80 organizers have sought permission for ticketed venues in and around the city. Against this, the number of sheri garba (local-level garbas) is expected to exceed 10,000.

Sheri garbas have gradually become bigger and in the last few years societies have been spending anything between Rs 1 lakh and Rs 10 lakh for nine nights – this includes cost of prizes and decorations. The police wants organizers to ensure strict adherence to the specified norms for permissions. There should be adequate security arrangements, CCTV cameras, metal detectors at entry points, and separate entry and exit points apart from adequate parking space.

The embarrassment of the DRI can be well imagined. It came as a shock to them to learn that the 52-Kg of gold it had seized was actually lead and copper with no trace of gold in it. This has been reported in timesofindia.indiatimes.com dated 15 May 2015.

This seizure had been by the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) who had claimed at the time that it had managed to bust a major attempt to smuggle gold worth Rs 14 crore into the country. The so-called gold had been seized from two persons who had been put up in a hotel located on Ashram road and they had been sent to judicial custody.
It gold has turned out to be lead bars with a coating of copper and the 52 bars, each thought to be 1 kg gold, weighed less and have no gold in them but were made of lead and copper.
The discrepancy came to light when DRI had sent the bars to FSL to determine the purity of the 'gold' and the feedback came that the bars are not made of gold but of lead with a coating of copper.

The winner KXIP was declared based on the super over in which they scored 12 runs while RR had to be content with only 6 runs. This win by KXIP put a brake on the winning spree of the RR because they had won all 5 previous matches and this would have been their 6th straight win. Bit, the Gods willed otherwise.
RR had posted a formidable score of 191 and, in the chase, captain Virender Sehwag (2) failed to click while Murali Vijay (21) gave some support. However, Shaun Marsh managed to score a half-century off 32 balls with a down the ground six. He had an able partner in David Miller and their 58-run stand ended when Marsh fell to a catch taken by Rahane in the deep. At the time, KXIP were 117 for four.
Previously, Ajinkya Rahane hit a glorious 74 off 54 balls with six boundaries and two sixes as he laid the foundation for a reasonable total adding 95 for the opening wicket with skipper Shane Watson who scored 45 off 35 balls, 5x4, and 2x6.
But, in the end, Lady Luck did not favor the Royal Rajasthan Royals.

The Mumbai Indians had posted a score of 164 thanks to some hard hitting by Kieron Pollard but the Rajasthan Royals chased it down in the 20th over with 5 balls to spare as reported in zeenews.india.com dated 15 April 2015.

Obviously, the decision to bat first did not pay dividends for MI as they struggled to score only 45 runs in the first 10 overs – captain Rohit Sharma went out for a zero. Subsequently, a century-plus stand between Kieron Pollard (70 off 34 balls) and Corey Anderson (50 off 38 balls) helped the team to put up a respectable 164 for five.
The score appeared to be chicken feed for the RR and Captain Steve Smith scored an unbeaten 79 from 53 balls and he had for company Ajinkya Rahane (46) as they raised a 64-run stand for the second wicket.
