IPL9 - Mumbai beat Kolkata - Pollard hits an unbeaten 50 in just 17 balls

It was yet another exciting T20 match at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai when the home team beat Kolkata Knight Riders by 6 wickets with 2 overs to spare. Keiron Pollard hit the third fastest IPL fifty, off just 17 balls, while Mumbai captain Rohit Sharma carried his bat through the innings. Thus, Mumbai Indians successfully chased down the 175-run target set by the Kolkata Knight Riders in the 24th match of IPL9.

Mumbai won the toss and sent in KKR to bat first. Its captain Gautam Gambhir scored third fifty of the season and put on 69 runs for the opening wicket with Robin Uthappa to help KKR post a competitive 174/5.
However, it was not enough when there are hard hitters like Keiron Pollard in the MI team. He hit six huge sixes and two fours to score an unbeaten 51 off just 17 balls. Rohit Sharma playe through the innings to remain not out on 68 off 49 balls, which included two sixes and eight fours.
The two of them added 72 runs for the fifth wicket in just five overs as they finished off with six wickets and two overs to spare.
Rohit Sharma was adjudged the Man of the Match.

M S Dhoni knows just how to deliver and, even with a new franchisee in Rising Pune SuperGiants, he showed that he is always the Boss. It was a fantastic debut for his team as it scripted a 9 wicket win over Mumbai Indians, the IPL8 champions, at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai to set in motion the prestigious IPL9 season.

Winning the toss, MI opted to bat first and Dhoni, the captain of the new entrant Rising Pune Supergiants, lost no time in putting his plans into action that left the MI bewildered. They kept losing wickets too fast for comfort and only three batsmen reached double figures - Harbhajan Singh (45 not out), Ambati Rayudu (22) and Vinay Kumar (12). Finally, MI wa all out for 121/8.
And, that score was overhauled in 14.4 overs by RPS - Ajinkya Rahane scored 66 not out and was declared Man of the Match.
With this win, RPS have announced their arrival but, one must remember that MI is a determined team with many big names and, in IPL8, it had lost five matched on the trot before recovering to win the trophy. This is just the start of, what promises to be, an exciting contest as always. It will keep people glued to their TV sets.

He scored 133 runs in just 59 balls and, in the company of captain Virat Kohli who chipped in with an unbeaten 82 runs, put up a huge score of 235 runs for the loss of only one wicket – that of Gayle.
A B de Villiers hit four sixes and 19 fours in his total of 133 and it was a one-man show with Kohli playing second fiddle as reported in timesofindia.indiatimes.com dated 10 May 2015.

The stand of 215 in 102 balls is, now, an all-time IPL record partnership. It has overtaken the earlier best of 206 between Adam Gilchrist and Shaun Marsh and they had put it up against RCB while they played for Kings XI Punjab in 2011 at Dharamsala.
The Mumbai Indians did stage a fight of sorts but fell short by 39 runs and, with this win, RCB move up to the 4th spot in the points table. RCB still has three games in hand and appear to be well-poised to enter the play-offs. It was a disappointment for the Mumbai crowd at the Wankhede Stadium and, if Harbhajan Singh had not dropped de Villiers when he was on 6, things might have been different but then, T20 does not believe in ifs and buts, its all about here and now.

But the two pronged attack of the Sun Risers Hyderabad pace bowlers Dale Steyn and Trent Boult restricted the home team to 157 for 8. That should have been an easy score to defend but, in practice, the SRH faltered because of its weak batting lineup.

Ultimately, Hyderabad fell 20 runs short and ended with 137 for 8. Lasith Malinga (4 for 23) did most of the damage while and Mitchell McClenaghan (3 for 20) also contributed to the downfall of SRH.
It has once again been revealed that SRH relies heavily on its two star batsmen David Warner and Shikhar Dhawan. In the two matches that SRH have won in IPL8, these two batsmen had put on stands of 82 and 130. This top-heavy batting line-up was exposed at the Wankhede since the other batsmen choked against some disciplined bowling of the MI.
Lasith Malinga was named Man of the Match.

Winning the toss and electing to bat, they managed to post a fairly good score of 183 runs for the loss of 7 wickets in spite of a miserable start but had not reckoned with the batting prowess of Chennai Super Kings even when playing away games.

The Chennai opening batsmen plundered runs at will and the pair of Dwayne Smith and Brendon McCullum made a mockery of the target of 184 set by Mumbai Indians at the Wankhede Stadium. Their opening stand of 109-runs in just 44 balls helped CSK to their third successive victory by six wickets and with 20 balls to spare.
Mumbai Indians, in search of their first win, had done well to post 183 for 7 thanks to Kieron Pollard's 30-ball 64 - after being three down for just 12 runs in the early stages of their innings.
The loss belted out to MI by CSK was certainly not due to bad bowling but a case of two attacking batsmen, facing a stiff target and playing inhibited cricket on a batting friendly pitch.
Loss of any match is always a disappointment, especially when it happens in front of the home crowd.
