Robbers try to steal money from ATM - burn up Rs 17.30 lakhs in the process

A bunch of robbers tried to rob an ATM of the State Bank of India in Burdwan - they entered the kiosk, deactivated the CCTV camera and, using a gas cutter, trued to gain access to the stock of notes in the machine. But, in the process, they set the machine on fire and fled the scene. A total of Rs17.30 lakhs was reduced to cinders.
This has been reported in telegraphindia.com dated 16 January 2016.
The theft was discovered next morning when some passerby noticed burnt notes lying in front of the kiosk. There were only two notes of Rs 1,000 and three of Rs 500. The regional manager of SBI has said that the ATM had had Rs 17.30 lakh and, almost all of it was destroyed. He assured the customers that they need not worry since the money kept in ATMs were always insured.
The police have confirmed that the gang had entered the ATM around 2am and, except the five currency notes, the entire amount was gutted. The gang could not take away any money because the ATM caught fire almost immediately after the gas cutter was used. The gang fled and pulled down the shutter of the kiosk before leaving so that police personnel on night patrol would not suspect anything amiss.

Good news for the ladies of Kolkata – CCTVs in buses will provide safety

Kolkata is setting a trend towards providing better safety to the women of Kolkata when they opt to travel by the JNNURM buses of the state-run Calcutta State Transport Corporation. It has installed CCTVs in 632 buses at the rate of three for every bus.
This has been reported in timesofindia.indiatimes.com dated 15 April 2015.
Two of the CCTVs will be installed inside the bus, one in the front, another at the center and the third will be located externally at the rear of the vehicle to record movement of vehicles on the road in the vicinity.
The storage capacity would be 100GB for each bus and in the initial stages, the footage captured by the CCTVs would be stored for three days. Later it would be overwritten automatically. Therefore, anyone having any complaint of theft, or pickpocketing, or bad behavior by the ticket-conductor or the bus driver or any other problem would have to register the same within three days.
Moreover, the CCTV footage would help in investigating accidents.
Officers of the Kolkata Police have carried out an inspection of the buses and have expressed satisfaction with the camera surveillance system.
On the face of it, this appears to be what the city needs but, installing this on only 632 buses may not be sufficient – these buses would probably operate on only a few select routes and, routes where instances of crimes are more may not be covered. As per information on CSTC website, it has a total of 840 buses – the remaining would also need to be brought under CCTV surveillance. And - care must be taken to ensure that no one steals the CCTV units - they can fetch a couple of hundred rupees per piece.

Mumbai in the eyes of possible Lashkar-e-Toiba terror attack

#Intelligencereport #Mumbai #terrorattack #searoute Intelligence reports have been provided to the Mumbai Police about the possibility of a terror attack by Lashkar-e-Toiba militants on the financial capital of Mumbai. The intelligence inputs suggest that there could be a group of 8-10 militants and they could sneak in through the sea route. Their probable targets could be hotels of railway stations.
This has been reported in zeenews.india.com dated 14 April 2015.
The fears have been expressed because of the release of Zaki-ur-Rehman Lakhvi from Pakistani jail of the mastermind of the 2008 Mumbai terror attacks. He was a commander of the LeT.
It may be recalled that in 2008, a seaborne assault was carried out by Pakistani gunmen on Mumbai, the nation`s financial capital. There were a total of 10 Pakistani gunmen who arrived on a rubber boat in Mumbai. Subsequently, they carried out a commando-style assault on two luxury hotels, a train station and a Jewish center in which a total of 166 people of different nationalities were killed.
After the attack that caught the security people by surprise, India has upgraded coastal security, invested heavily on patrol vessels, helicopters and building a coastal radar network to prevent a similar attack.
However, the fact remains that many of the CCTVs installed at critical locations do not function, there are gaping holes in the boundary walls of railway stations and the Indian common man is still too simple – they can be taken for a ride very easily by smooth operators. Even the police who are detailed to man the check points do not know what exactly they are looking for.

68-year-old thief used wrappers of KitKat chocolates steal £20,000 in cash

No doubt it was an innovative idea to steal out cash using empty wrappers of KitKat chocolates but the 68-year-old thief got caught. This has been reported in dailymail.co.uk dated 20 March 2015.
His modus operandi was simple - he would eat the chocolate ad stuff the empty wrapper with wads of £50 notes that he stole from his employers Vaultex Ltd in Tonbridge, Kent. His activities were caught on CCTV after his employers at the cash handling depot became suspicious. On investigation they came across 97 incidents over 50 days of Mills who used to hide the money and subsequently conceal the wrappers on his body.
When searched, the staff found five £50 notes round a KitKat wrapper and they handed over the case to the Kent Police who found more cash in the car of the errant employee. Moreover, a search of his locker revealed a stash of empty KitKat wrappers inside.
He had been working with Vaultex Ltd since 2008 and was given a 21 month prison sentence for the £20,000 that he stole.

Hong Kong girl walked off with a diamond necklace worth £2.8m

#diamondnecklace #hongkong Her age is believed to be between 12 and 14 and she walked off with a diamond necklace worth £2.8m from a jewelry shop in Hong Kong. It seems she was in a gang of three – the others were in their 30s and 40s. The gang consisted of this girl and two women and a man.
The adults "pretended to be customers choosing items from the shop" and the girl stole the necklace and all four left the shop before a staff member realized that the necklace was missing.
The girl apparently stole a key from a drawer to open a cabinet while the shop staff were distracted. The three adults had posed as big spenders and kept demanding that the employees keep showing them more and more jewelry. The intention was to keep the attention diverted.
The diamond necklace was of 100-carat gold embedded with more than 30 diamonds and priced at around £2.8m. CCTV has captured the photo of the girl – she was slim, dressed in black trousers, a blue shirt and a grey hooded top as she left the shop.
The gang had spent nearly half an hour in the shop and the staff did not notice the loss of the necklace till late in the day. This is as reported in South China Morning Post.
