Gold coin on offer to Kerala civic authorities who cull maximum number of stray dogs

The alumni association of a prominent college has announced an incentive to eliminate the menace of stray dogs in Kerala. The association would give gold coins to the civic authorities which killed the maximum number of stray dogs till December 10 in Kerala because four persons have lost their lives and over 700 have been injured in canine attacks in the last four months.

As per official government figures, 701 people, including 175 children, were injured in stray dog attacks in the last four months across the State and, in the current year, 53,000 people have taken treatment for dog bites in government medical college hospitals alone. Obviously, this is a matter of concern.
Therefore, office-bearers of the Old Students Welfare Association of the Pala-based (Kottayam) St. Thomas College has indicated an incentive in the form of a “gift” of gold coin that would be given to the heads of panchayats and municipalities across the State where most stray dogs were killed.
The outfit had recently provided air guns at subsidised rates to deal with violent dogs and, before that, a State-based industrialist had offered cash incentives were for culling dogs.
The gold coins would be bought with contributions from the representatives of the 1,200 member-association and the weight of the coins would be decided according to the total amount collected. The civic authorities, who apply for the gold coins, should submit day-to-day figures of the culled dogs.

Agra reported 50K attacks by monkeys and stray dogs

Agra sees on an average 201 cases of attacks by stray dogs and monkeys and it adds up to nearly 50,000 in the current year - data accessed from district hospital Agra reveals that 48,876 people have been vaccinated from monkey and dog bites in 243 days between January to August month this year. It reached its peak of 7,913 cases in the month of May.
In comparison, last year the figure was of over 38,000 people who were treated in hospital after being attacked by animals in Agra.

It is the responsibility of civic body to control the animal population in the district and, chief veterinary officer of Agra Municipal Corporation has clarified that 30-40 dogs are caught daily and they are then vaccinated and sterilized by private animal rehabilitation centers such as People For Animal (PFA).
As far as monkeys were concerned, Wildlife SOS is trying to catch and vaccinate/sterilize them. In last six months 401 monkeys have been taken care of by this method. The situation has worsened over the years and, at times, there are up to 600 persons who have been administered anti-rabies injections on a single day.

Stray dog bites killed 429 people in Mumbai in last 20-years, terrorists killed 421 in same period

An interesting bit of information has emerged on the stray dog menace in the city of Mumbai. Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has made a startling revelation to the Supreme Court that dog bites in Mumbai accounted for more deaths in 20 years than the combined toll in two deadly terror strikes in the city namely, the 1993 serial bomb blasts and 26/11 attacks.

As per statistics, since 1994, a total of 429 people, bitten by stray dogs, have succumbed to rabies and during the same period dog bites injured 13.12 lakh people. Against this, the 1993 serial bomb blasts killed a total of 257 people and left 717 injured. The 26/11 terrorist attack on Mumbai left 164 dead and 308 injured. The sum total is 421 deaths and 1,025 injured.
The BMC has also indicated that every year, a large number of persons get bitten by dogs in Mumbai and when efforts are made to remove the dogs, the animal lovers protest but do nothing to eliminate the problem. The animal lovers are passionate no doubt but in their enthusiasm to protect the rights of animals, they obstruct the work of the civic bodies in capturing the stray dogs and sterilizing them.
Incidentally, the menace of stray dogs is so great that many people desist from taking walks in the morning and evening because of the fear of being bitten.
The Bench has directed that sterilization and vaccination of stray dogs must be done in accordance with the law and no NGO shall create any impediment in this work.
