Express train mows down 18 bulls on the Kanpur-New Delhi route

The Old Delhi-bound Kaifiyat Express mowed down 18 bulls on the Kanpur-New Delhi route. The train ran over the herd of cattle on the stretch between Shikohabad and Kaurara. Incidentally, there was a breakdown of the engine of the corresponding train that was heading for Azamgarh and was on the down track.
This resulted in delays in movement of trains on the stretch for over two hours and both the incidents took place within a distance of 20-Km apart.

Authorities suspect that the cattle were being smuggled to a slaughterhouse because those who were herding the animals vanished from the spot.
It may be recalled that in June 2015, 14 nilgais were mowed down by a passenger train near Kampil jungle which is approximately 148-Km from Agra.

Second UP International Bird Festival sees 36000 participants - hopeful for a Guinness Record

The second UP International Bird Festival sees 36000 participants and UP is hopeful of bagging a Guinness Record. It has already got to its credit one Guinness Record for this year for planting maximum trees in one go across the state.
It now wants another one for its bird watching activity that was carried out simultaneously at 452 locations in which over 36,000 persons participated.

It seems a total of more than 1.9 lakh birds were spotted in the span of one day. As per forest officials, no such attempt was ever made in the past where such a large number of people participated in such a coordinated event. Hence, it would apply to the Guinness Book of World Records for this event.
It may be recalled that the UP government has recently been awarded Guinness record of planting 5 crore saplings in 24 hours in July 2016.
This is the second edition of the UP Bird Festival and it is being organized between December 2 and 4 at Chambal safari Lodge in Bah located some 80-Km from Agra. There are around 45 international foreign bird watchers from 26 countries apart from 100 Indian experts who are participating in the event.

Second annual six-day Taj Balloon Festival begins

The second annual six-day Taj Balloon Festival started in Agra with as many as eight colorful hot air balloons dotting the early morning Taj Mahal sky. Those who were on-board the multi-colour balloons of various shapes and sizes enjoyed the beautiful architecture of the iconic 17th century monument from thousands of feet above the ground. Hundreds of city residents had gathered on their roof tops to wave at the balloons which traveled from one end of the city to the other.

There are a total of 16 hot air balloons from 12 countries taking part in this six-day event. They have highly-experienced pilots and crew from India and around the world. The festival includes both morning flights and tethered flights in the evening at PAC ground. The balloonists hail from the US, UK, Spain, Germany, and UAE.
The ride is free for tourists/locals through lucky draws that will be conducted for all six days.
A balloonist from UAE has remarked - the iconic view of Taj Mahal from the sky will be a big crowd puller any given day ... the service should be made a permanent feature for tourists just on the lines of Jaipur.

Owls being sacrificed in UP during Diwali to bring home the riches

Animals are sacrificed to appease the Gods and in UP, as Diwali approaches, the bird markets witness a very seasonal and very brutal trade in owls. This is done by some in the belief that if an owl is sacrificed in a house during Lakshmi puja, the goddess will be forced to "stay" with the family and bring in the riches.

Much of this trade is routed through Agra, as revealed by wildlife activists. In the city, the birds costing upwards of Rs 30,000 each, can even be home delivered. Moreover, for the squeamish, the trader will sacrifice it for the believers.
In the opinion of wildlife activists, Agra is one of the major hubs for this trade and places like Korai-Karavili village, near Fatehpuri Sikri, and Kosi Kalan in Mathura are infamous for it.
These owls are sold at a premium and are brought in only after a specific demand is made. This demand is usually for black magic, or during the Diwali season for sacrifice. The birds are often delivered right to the buyer's doorstep due to which such transactions remains undocumented.

Mud pack therapy to be done on dome of Taj Mahal to remove yellowness

Taj Mahal, the 17th century monument in Agra is scheduled for mud-pack therapy on its main dome to remove yellowness from the white marble surface. As indicated by officials of the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI), the process will take more than a year to complete. This is because iron scaffolding will have to be put all around the main dome.

The therapy will be carried out by the ASI's science branch and it is part of a conservation plan that had been submitted to the Parliamentary standing committee on environment. It had raised serious objections over black and yellow spots on the marble surface, especially the minarets, during an inspection in April last year.
Conservation work on three of the four minarets has already been done. Work on the fourth minaret will start with the main structure.
The mudpack therapy session started in April 2015. That was after the Parliamentary panel conducted an inspection of the monument because an Indo-US study had claimed that black and brown carbons along with dust were giving rise to yellowing of the monument. It was repeated in September after hordes of insects left green patches on the wall.

Agra reported 50K attacks by monkeys and stray dogs

Agra sees on an average 201 cases of attacks by stray dogs and monkeys and it adds up to nearly 50,000 in the current year - data accessed from district hospital Agra reveals that 48,876 people have been vaccinated from monkey and dog bites in 243 days between January to August month this year. It reached its peak of 7,913 cases in the month of May.
In comparison, last year the figure was of over 38,000 people who were treated in hospital after being attacked by animals in Agra.

It is the responsibility of civic body to control the animal population in the district and, chief veterinary officer of Agra Municipal Corporation has clarified that 30-40 dogs are caught daily and they are then vaccinated and sterilized by private animal rehabilitation centers such as People For Animal (PFA).
As far as monkeys were concerned, Wildlife SOS is trying to catch and vaccinate/sterilize them. In last six months 401 monkeys have been taken care of by this method. The situation has worsened over the years and, at times, there are up to 600 persons who have been administered anti-rabies injections on a single day.

Agra is a major tourist hub with Taj Mahal being one of the major destination for tourists. However, the way tourists are handled by those who matter leaves a lot to be desired. Therefore, the tourism department decided to organise a training session for police personnel and others on ways to serve the tourists better.

We have wonderful slogans like 'Incredible India' and 'atithi deva bhabo' but at the ground level, these do not have the desired effect. That is why a director of Institute of Tourism and Hotel Management, went on to elaborate to the police on how a person should present himself in front of a tourist. The police should consider tourists as guests and not as terrorists.
He went on to add that Agra is a very important city from the perspective of tourism and a change in the behavior of traders will help to improve the tourism prospects of the city. Tourists expect a safe and friendly environment when they visit a city. When they leave, it must be with a good impression about the city.
Thee would be more such sessions and in the next session, there would be members of Lapka to Apka group, tonga drivers, autorickshaw drivers, traffic police, photographers, officials of Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) and others associated with tourism.
It would be a regular feature to be held on the third Friday of every month till October.

Difficult to remove stray cattle from the streets of Agra

There are a few things that are interwoven into the fabrics of Indian society and, one of these is the menace of stray cattle roaming on the streets. Such sights are common in the city of Agra, famous for the Taj Mahal and, despite the Uttar Pradesh government ordering the local administration to alleviate such nuisance, nothing appears to have been done.
Based on a directive from UP chief secretary earlier this year, the Agra administration had held a meeting with cattle owners and warned them of punitive measures, if found guilty. The administration had given themselves time till June 10- unfortunately, the deadline has passed and no palpable changes are visible.

Cattle are taken for bathing in the Yamuna or they stroll at Fatehabad Road, Shilpgram, Mall Road, M G Road or places near Taj Mahal. The fact is that the local administration has failed to control the civic problem. The newly-appointed additional district magistrate has assured that the administration is working to make Agra free of strays.
As a part of this drive, all stray cattle in the city will be identified and marked. Once tat is done, they will be relocated outside the city. For that, an area is being located where such cattle will be transported. There is no time scale indicated but people are working "tirelessly" to get rid of the problem.
Regarding bathing of buffaloes and other cattle in the Yamuna, administration officers had promised to barricade the river, but that has yet to happen.

Forest fire devastates large areas of Agra bird sanctuary

Forest fire has devastated large areas of Soor Sarovar Bird Sanctuary in Agra and, the burnt carcass of a large 10 foot python was found. A baby hog deer (fawn) and baby wild boar (piglet) were rescued by NGO Wildlife SOS's Rapid Response Unit when the news of the forest fire reached them.

In the fire that broke out in Soor Sarovar Bird Sanctuary in Agra, hundreds of birds, reptiles and animals were killed and injured and several hectares of forest were damaged. The fire was attributed to a spark of the high-voltage electricity wires that pass through the sanctuary to provide electricity to the neighboring villages.
Located within the sanctuary is India's largest bear rescue center and it also came under threat. It is run by wildlife conservation organisation Wildlife SOS and at present has over 210 sloth bears.
Among the animals that were severely affected were a hog deer fawn and wild boar piglet that were found orphaned. The forest officials are tending to these baby animals and Wildlife SOS is providing medical care and treatment. Once they recover, and certified fit for release, they will be released back into the wild in the presence of the forest department officials.

Gatimaan Express takes off - covers Delhi to Agra in just 100 minutes

Gatimaan Express is today India's fastest train and it completed its maiden journey from Delhi to Agra in 100 minutes - this is a major improvement when compared to about 2-3 hours by other trains. Obviously, this is the forerunner to the Bullet train that is set to change the concept of travel by trains in India.
Gatimaan Express was flagged off by Railways Minister Suresh Prabhu - he flagged it off from Delhi's Hazrat Nizamuddin station.

The train runs at a speed of 160 km per hour and covered the 184-Km distance in 105-110 minutes. Incidentally, speed is not the only highlight of Gatimaan Express which is India's first semi-high speed train. Its coaches have been built at Kapurthala Railway Coach Factory in the Punjab and bio-toilets are developed by the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO).
The cost of train is around Rs 50 crore.
The composition of coaches is - two executive chair car plus eight AC chair car coaches. There is a provision for hotspot infotainment and the railways has prepared special menu too for its passengers. Apart from cakes and wafers, the passenger can choose vegetarian menu consisting of South Indian and Punjabi food and in the non-vegetarian category, he can go in for continental dishes and sausages.

Entry fee to Taj Mahal from April 1, 2016 would be Rs 40 for Indians and Rs 1000 for foreigners

The ASI has issued a final notification that entry prices to the Taj Mahal, the 17th century mausoleum would be revised from the new financial year i.e. April 1, 2016 and, Indians would now now have to pay Rs 40, while foreign nationals will have to pay Rs 1,000. This increase in real terms would be 200 times for Indians and 5,000 times for foreigners since 1966 - at that time, the entry fee was just 66 paise for both Indians and foreigners.

The entry fees has been revised 11 times over the past 50 years and differential pricing for Indians and foreign nationals is a recent phenomenon. For the first 34 years, 1966 to 2000, since introducing the entry fee, the price was same for both Indian and foreign tourists.
The increase in entry fees is expected to double the state and central government's income from sale of tickets at the Taj. In 2014-15, the figure was Rs 22.7 crore, which was about 23% of the total Rs 93 crore generated from all 116 ticketed monuments under the central conservation agency.
This is exclusive of the additional fee collected by Agra Development Authority as 'toll tax' on all monuments in Agra. This is Rs 10 as toll tax for indians and Rs 500 for foreigners.

Taj Mahotsav in Agra from February 18 to 27 to commemorate silver jubilee

Agra is set to celebrate the silver jubilee of Taj Mahotsav from February 18 to 27 in Agra and it would be a blue-ribbon event with star-studded attendees - one of them is-expected to be cricket World Cup-winning captain Kapil Dev. It would be a ten-day festival of art, culture and cuisine.

To commemorate the event organizers have planned a golf tournament between February 19 and 21. Kapil Dev and captain of 1980 Olympics gold medal-winning Indian hockey team Zafar Iqbal have agreed to take part in the competition in which 170 golfers are scheduled to participate.
On the cultural front there are plans to stage ten plays - or, one every day. There would also be Bollywood personalities like Mohit Chauhan, Palash Sen, Hariharan, Shreya Ghosal and Sundhi Chauhan who are expected to perform in the festival.
The artisans across the country will showcase their work at Shilpgram, the main venue of the Mahotsav. Other venues are Queen Mary Empress Library, Gandhi Smarak and Agra Club. There would be around 350 stalls of handicraft. The aim of hosting this event is to encourage people from Delhi NCR to come down to Agra and enjoy their getaway.
Tickets are reasonably priced - for domestic visitors it will remain at Rs 50 for people above the age of 12 and Rs 10 for children between 5 and 12. It will be free for children below 5 years of age and foreigners.

The Duke of Cambridge's mother was pictured sitting on a bench in front of the landmark in Agra in 1992. It was a symbol of her loneliness months before she and Prince Charles separated.

It is understood that Price Wlliam (33) and Kate (34), will visit the UNESCO World Heritage Site in April. An 'advance team' from the British High Commission has held talks with officials in Agra to sort out security arrangements for the royals. Of course, the advance team did not disclose much information about the itinerary. The exact dates were also not shared.
If it materializes, it will be the first time Kate or William would have journeyed to the country. Earlier, the Prince of Wales had visited India as recently as November 2013, on a nine-day tour.
The itinerary includes traveling round the Asian subcontinent between April 10 and 17 - their children would not be with them. Wills and Kate felt the trip would be too grueling for their children. It will not be the first time that the couple would have come minus their children. The couple had been to New York City in December 2014 without George who remained at home.
