Papua New Guinea experienced a 7.6 magnitude earthquake that left at least five dead. According to the United States Geological Survey, the earthquake struck at a depth of 38 miles about 41 miles from the eastern town of Kainantu. The quake shook the country, damaged buildings and triggered landslides. As per information, two persons died in remote mountain villages. Three others were buried alive. Arrangements were made to airlift four others to hospital. They were in critical condition. There was widespread damage as a landslide buried homes and “split” one village where people “lost their houses.” The nation’s leader, James Marape, described the earthquake as “massive.” He advised his people to be cautious and added that the damage would not be as massive as the 2018 earthquake. It had killed an estimated 150 people. Five killed as powerful earthquake strikes Papua New Guinea. The authorities have yet to assess the extent of damage and number of casualties.
The United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) in Asia and the Pacific said people had suffered injuries from falling structures or debris, and some health centers, homes, rural roads and highways are damaged. There are damages in the power infrastructure with consequent outages across the Eastern Highlands. Residents shared images and videos on social media of cracked roads, damaged buildings and cars, and items falling off supermarket shelves. Small aviation companies and missionary groups involved themselves to airlift some of the injured across the rugged jungle landscape. Locals who resided near the epicenter described the vibration as much more vigorous than previous quakes. Earthquakes are common in Papua New Guinea because it sits on the Pacific Ocean’s “Ring of Fire.” This is a hotspot for seismic activity due to friction between tectonic plates. A 9.1 magnitude quake in Indonesia in 2004 triggered a tsunami that killed 220,000 throughout the region.

Bali converts Boeing aircraft to tourist destination and Singapore Airlines converted Airbus into restaurant
Aircraft like Boeing and Airbus are designed to carry passengers who love to use the aerial route to travel from one place to another. These patrons value their time and want to reach their destination at the earliest. To them, time is money and they bring in revenue for the airlines. However, a time comes when these aircraft are used for purposes other than flying. One such example has become news. It seems inhabitants in Bali are witness to such a situation. Bali inhabitants baffled by Boeing 737 resting in field. Its location is near the popular Pandawa beach in a limestone quarry close to a highway. Its front portion has runway steps leaning against it. Incidentally, it has become a popular tourist destination. Its origin remains a mystery.
During the COVID-19 pandemic, Singapore Airlines had the bright idea of converting two of its Airbus into restaurants. It was to allow people to enjoy the thrill of dining in a different surrounding. Travel-starved diners eat in parked jets turned into restaurants. it was a huge success and travel-starved diners enjoyed the unique experience. At that time, the aviation industry was in a crisis and had to dream up strategies to remain visible. The airline was the flag carrier of Singapore and it offered passengers the chance to dine on board two A380 superjumbos -- the world's biggest passenger jet.

Overloaded boat catches fire in Indonesia - 23 dead, another 17 missing
Most of the passengers were Indonesians who were celebrating the New Year holiday. The Jakarta Search and Rescue Agency has indicated that at least five ships and a number of speedboats and rubber boats have been deployed in the search.
This has been reported in thehindu.com dated 2 January 2017.
The fire had gutted about half the vessel, and twenty bodies that were found inside the vessel were burned beyond recognition and were transferred to a police hospital for identification. The fire apparently broke out about 15 minutes after the ferry had left the port of Muara Angke.
The ferry’s passenger manifest indicated that only 100 were registered as passengers, along with six crewmen but, in reality, there were nearly 260 passengers.

6.5-magnitude quake strikes Aceh in Sumatra - at least 52 feared dead
The earthquake struck Aceh province on Indonesia's Sumatra island.
This has been reported in timesofindia.indiatimes.com dated 7 December 2016.
The death toll is likely to increase as rescue crews sift through the rubble to try and locate those trapped below. The destruction is on a massive scale because hundreds of homes, mosques and shops have collapsed. A local hospital and school were also heavily damaged.
The earthquake was felt across much of Aceh - it had been devastated by the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami.
Incidentally, Indonesia experiences frequent seismic and volcanic activity which is due to its position on the Pacific "Ring of Fire", where tectonic plates collide.

Indonesian smugglers stuff yellow-crested cockatoos into plastic bottles to get past customs
This has been reported in dailymail.co.uk dated 4 May 2015.
The birds were meant for illegal trade and, the Indonesian Police discovered the birds. They can fetch as much as £650 each. The birds were set free for medical attention.
These yellow-crested cockatoo is listed as a critically endangered species by the International Union for the Conservation of Nature and Natural Resources in 2007. The population of these birds is low due to deforestation and poaching and, as per recent studies, there are less than 7,000 of them remaining.
Yellow-crested cockatoos breed very slowly and lay eggs only once a year and can range in size from 12 inch to about 27inch in length. The color of the body is white but they sport a beautiful yellow crest.
Incidentally, trade in birds like parrots, including Lories and Cockatoos, is a lucrative business and every year, around 10,000 of them are caught from the wild in North Halmahera, Indonesia, and supplied to the domestic markets and the international illegal wildlife trade.

Year-end panic as AirAsia A320-200 with 162 on board goes missing
The crew of the Airbus A320-200 It was the Flight QZ8501 that took off from Juanda International Airport and lost contact with air traffic control at about shortly before it was to land at Singapore.
As revealed by Djoko Murjatmodjo, Indonesia's acting director general of transportation, the pilot of the plane lost contact with the air traffic control shortly after the pilot asked to avoid a cloud bank by turning left and going higher to 34,000 feet.
There was no distress signal from Flight QZ8501 - the distance between Surabaya and Singapore is about 860 miles and the contact was lost about 42 minutes after takeoff from Surabaya airport. It seems at that time, the plane was believed to be over the Java Sea between Kalimantan and Java islands. The weather in the area was cloudy.
The plane was carrying 155 passengers, including 138 adults, 16 children and an infant and most of them were Indonesian nationals. However, there also were one passenger each from Singapore, Malaysia and France and three from South Korea. This is another mysterious disappearance of a flight similar to the Malaysian Airlines Flight MH370 which went missing shortly after takeoff from Kuala Lumpur.
