Typhoon Meranti set to strike Taiwan - nearly 1800 tourists evacuated

Taiwan is bracing itself for the approaching super typhoon Meranti and nearly 1,800 tourists have been evacuated from offshore islands like Green Island and Orchid Island which are popular tourist destinations. Some schools and offices have also been closed down as a precautionary measure.

AS per forecast of the Central Weather Bureau, typhoon Meranti is expected to skirt past the island`s southern tip resulting in torrential rain and powerful winds. It is maintaining its strength and speed, and its impact will be the strongest on Wednesday and early Thursday.
Meranti, the super typhoon, would dampen celebrations and disrupt traffic during the four-day Mid-autumn Festival holiday period - it is a major holiday in Taiwan, Hong Kong and China. Authorities have suspended ferry services to the two destinations Green Island and Orchid Island. Offices and schools were shut down in Orchid Island from Tuesday afternoon and the defense ministry had ordered around 33,000 soldiers to be on standby.
Incidentally, three people were killed and hundreds were injured when super typhoon Nepartak had pounded Taiwan in July with the strongest winds in over a century.
