Ninth pineapple festival held in Manipur, Imphal - 180 farmers participated


Manipur is hosting the ninth state pineapple festival cum seller and buyer meet and youth festival at the Yairipok Thambalnu Market. It was inaugurated by Chief Minister Okram Ibobi Singh with the aim to promote pineapple growers and around 180 pineapple farmers are participating.
It is being held under the initiative of Development Organization Andro Kendra (DOAK).

The climate of Manipur is favorable for pineapple cultivation and the demand for the fruit had increased with the establishment of many canning industries during the last two decades. An estimated 1.38 million tonnes of pineapple is produced from 0.09 million hectares of land and is the main fruit cultivated by farmers in Manipur.
Pineapple is found in other parts of the country but the Manipur pineapple has got a distinctive taste and flavor. AS a farmer has admitted - he earns around a lakh from pineapple farming. Imphal East is the largest producer of pineapples among all the districts and cultivation of pineapples is a big means of income for the people of the area.
