Five hours power failure hits London rail – fights break out among passengers


#ClaphamJunction #SouthernRail #powerfailure The folks of London are not used to a power failure of five hours that paralyzed the rail services because passengers remained stranded and were forced to endure discomfort, frustration and danger that are usually more associated with travel in the Third World.

It happened during the morning rush hour as services descended into chaos at the Clapham Junction station which is Britain’s busiest interchange station.
Firefighters had to use ladders to help passengers get to safety after some 1,200 people were stuck on the East Grinstead to Victoria train – this is located nearly a quarter of a mile south of Clapham Junction.
The passengers were stuck between stations in South London because of the problem with the power supply due to which four lines being closed. As a result, on the platforms, fights broke out among the passengers when trains did arrive. Everyone wanted to get in first and the passengers pushed their way through the doors.
Police rose to the occasion and boarded the stranded trains to hand out water. Paramedics were also on hand in case travelers, including pregnant women, were affected as the crowded carriages became unbearably hot. Moreover, passengers were not allowed to leave the trains on their own due to safety concerns.
