6.3 magnitude earthquake sends people fleeing in Morocco and Spain

#AlHoceima #spain #earthquake It was a strong 6.3-magnitude earthquake that struck the Mediterranean between Morocco and Spain and send the people fleeing for cover. The 20-mile deep quake hit at 5.22am (local time). The location was 39 miles north of the Moroccan city of Al Hoceima and 102 miles east-southeast of Gibraltar as confirmed by the US Geological Survey said.

There were six aftershocks including a 5.3-magnitude tremor but there were no immediate reports of any fatalities. However, emergency services received 250 calls from alarmed residents in the Andalucia region, in southern Spain and tremors and aftershocks were felt throughout the area including in the cities of Malaga, Cordoba, Seville and Granada. Nearly 200 households in the Spanish enclave on the Moroccan coast suffered damage to their properties.
It may be recalled that in February 2004, a strong 6.3-magnitude earthquake had hit near Al Hoceima and killed 631 people. This time the location is same but no report of fatalities. Incidentally, on Sunday, the US state of Alaska was hit by a magnitude-6.8 earthquake.

During Ramadan, Muslims are forbidden from several activities from dawn until sunset like eating, drinking, smoking and having sex. Any violation of this religious code is viewed very seriously as four Moroccan youths have found out the hard way.

The police have arrested them because they were drinking fruit juice in public during the daylight hours of the Muslim fasting month of Ramadan. They have received suspended four-month jail terms. There was a fifth young person – he was below the age of 18 and would go before a juvenile court on the same charges.
Under Moroccan law, the offenders could have got a penalty of up to six months behind bars. Hence, the punishment is light.
All the five were arrested July 6 in Marrakesh which is Morocco’s main tourist destinations. It seems they had been accompanying a friend to the airport and stopped to buy fruit juice from sellers in Jamaa El Fna Square. They even drank the juice in public and other juice sellers alerted the police.

Two Moroccan women, in their 20s, on trial for obscenity - they wore skirts to the market

Two hairdressers of Morocco, one aged 23 and the other 29, have been put on trial for wearing obscene dress to the market. They were wearing skirts!
This has been reported in dailymail.co.uk dated 7 July 2015.

They were arrested as they strolled through the open-air market in Inezgane, a suburb of the southern city of Agadir, last month on their way to work and have been charged with gross indecency for wearing skirts.
It seems a market trader noticed what they were wearing and drew attention of other traders to this indecency of wearing flimsy and 'immoral' clothes. Therefore, the security forces intervened, rescued the duo from the angry crowd and took them to a police station to be charged.
The women are being tried under an article in the penal code which says that anyone found guilty of public obscenity can be jailed for between a month and two years. The case has already sparked an outrage across the world, with an internet petition calling the arrest an attack on personal freedom. It has attracted over 25,000 signatures.
There have also been a number of demonstrations in Morocco, including in the commercial capital Casablanca, with protesters saying that women should have the freedom to wear what they want.
