Father sends his minor children to beg on the streets to augment the family income

Of late, one hears of Digital India, Skill India, Make in India and other similar slogans but the ground reality is that a father in Aurangabad has been arrested because he had sent his minor children aged three, five and seven years to beg on the streets to augment the family income.

The 35-year-old father was arrested by the police from Kranti Chowk after coming to know that some minors were indulging in begging within the court premises. All the three minors were presented before the women and child welfare committee for sending them to the rehabilitation center.
Investigation revealed that their family members had forced them to drop out from the school and get into begging in a bid to add to the family's paltry income. The father has been identified and slapped with charges for forcing juveniles to beg. If convicted, he may be face imprisonment of up to three years. And, after that, what will happen is not known - can the man and his kids return back to a normal life? This is the sad state of the story behind the glitter of hi-fi dreams and thousands of promises.

The Bengaluru Police deserve kudos for undertaking a special drive against infant and child beggars and have managed to rescue 164 children in the crackdown. But, as the police admit, this is just the tip of the iceberg. It seems some of the children were hardly two years of age and some were as young as eight months.
The Bengaluru Police and child rights workers have rounded up 264 beggars in a joint operation and 164 of them were children and 25 were infants. They usually operated at traffic junctions, or beg on the streets to get the sympathy of passers-by.

As revealed by the police – the beggars are mostly from Andhra, few are from other states like Tamil Nadu. Doctors are carrying out health checks to find out if anyone was drugged or any child has been harmed physically, or abused. DNA tests are also being done.
Roping in children for begging has been going for ages in India and, it is believed to be a well-organized mechanism for goons to mint money – they exploit the children who are forced into this trade.
