Jhal muri is a pure Bengali fast food and it has wowed Londoners as well

Jhal muri is a heady concoction of fluffed rice (muri) mixed with chopped onions, green chilies, fried groundnuts and a whole of spices and topped up with raw mustard oil to give the tangy taste - a slice of coconut is added while serving. This is a pure Bengali fast food and it has now won over Londoners, thanks to a chef who prepares and sells it just like his counterparts do in Bengal.

This chef has been preparing and selling the quintessential Kolkatan street food 'jhal muri' for a while now. His food van is named 'Everybody love love jhal muri' and people throng for a spicy cone of this Indian street food every day in various parts of London. It all began in a small way as a small cart and it has now transformed into a beautiful food van. The van looks every bit Indian as well with eye-popping vibrant colors, and flowers, and it will certainly remind one of home.
Encouraged by the response he has received, he has incorporated a few other Indian delights into his menu like Phuchkas, Ghugni, Lassi, Bengali Chai and Channa Masala.

Kolkata Municipal Corporation wants safe foods on the streets

Kolkata Municipal Corporation has taken up cudgels to ensure that the street food variable in the city must ensure necessary food safety norms, the same will be applicable even to posh eateries in the city. A senior member of KMC visited a number of street food vendors situated at the Dacre’s Lane at Esplanade and also some of the posh eateries including the Lalit’s Great Eastern hotel situated at the central office district of the city to obtain first hand information.

To express the concern of maintaining food safety norms by the vendors, the civic health department will be distributing a booklet on food safety guideline. During his visit, the dignitary found an eatery using industrial ice, which is not approved to be used in food. Action has not been taken against the vendor, but the stock of such ice has been destroyed.
The civic health team also found usage of synthetic color by an eater owner. That was also seized. It must be noted that the color can be applied only in making sweets but not in cooked food.
Such visits will be undertaken at regular intervals to create awareness.
