Another selfie death - 22-year-old boy slips and falls into a ravine in Dehradun

Another selfie death has takenplace when a 22-year-old college student slipped while clicking a selfie at the edge of a mountain on the Dehradun-Mussoorie road. He slipped and lost his footing and fell into a ravine 50-metre-deep ravine.
The victim was a first year B.Com student at a private university in Dehradun, and a resident of Kichha in Udham Singh Nagar. He had gone to Mussoorie on a day-long trip with his friend.

It seems on the return journey to Dehradun, he stopped his bike near Kolukhet to click photos against the picturesque background when he lost hos footing. His friend raised an alarm and called local residents for help who informed police about the incident. The boy had sustained injuries on his head and died on the spot.
Incidentally, the number of selfie-related deaths has seen an upward trend in Uttarakhand.
On January 13 this year, a girl fell into Alaknanda river while she was trying to take a selfie near Koteshwar temple in Rudraprayag district. Earlier, on New Year's eve, a resident of Dehradun fell a victim to selfie - that happened near Chunakhaal on Dehradun-Mussoorie road.
In yet another incident in 2016, a 24-year-old girl fell into Song river at Maldevta on the outskirts of Dehradun as she was trying to take a selfie.

German tourist dies while taking selfie in Machu Picchu

A German tourist lost his balance and died after falling down a ravine - he was taking a selfie at the ancient city of Machu Picchu in the Peruvian Andes. The 51-year-old had ignored warnings before he went to a restricted area close to a cliff.
It seems he wanted to pose for a photograph as if he was flying, by jumping in the air, but dis-balanced and fell to his death. His body was subsequently recovered by a rescue team.

Selfie deaths are becoming more common due to the prevalence of personal mobile devices. As revealed by figures released earlier this year by Priceonomics, India was the number one location for deaths by selfie, followed by Russia and the United States.
Selfies have been the cause of at least 49 deaths around the world since 2014. In order to check the trend, the Russian Interior Ministry has published a "Safe Selfie" guide to help prevent further deaths and, in India, Mumbai has declared 16 "no-selfie zones" across the city. The most common cause of selfie death was falling from a height.

Taking a cue from other states, Karnataka has decided to ban selfies at tourist spots like waterfalls, dams and cliffs because there have been a number of unfortunate deaths of people who had taken took one wrong step in their quest for that perfect frame and paid the penalty.
It is understood that state tourism has identified more than 60 locations that would be declared "no-selfie zones", with warning signs carrying messages like: "Make up your mind before the selfie becomes your last frame." The publicity material would also contain "no selfie" messages, and tourism officials and guides would be sensitised on the importance of restraining people from taking dangerous selfies.

It may be recalled that on Feb 12, three medical students fell into an irrigation canal in Hulivana, 180km from Bangalore, while taking selfies and died. More recently, on July 18, an ambulance driver and his friend fell 250ft into a gorge near Charmadi Ghats, Chikmagalur, while taking selfies.
Mumbai has already declared 16 "no-selfie zones" across the city - these are mainly at barrier-less seafronts, after the craze among the young for clicking themselves at unusual spots and at unusual angles led to several deaths. It has been observed that most selfie-linked deaths happen at places like dams, barrages, cliffs, waterfalls and ghats. People get lured (by the scenery), disregarding the fact that one false step can lead to disaster. India accounted for at least half the world's 27 selfie-related deaths last year.
