Kolkata to get its first crematorium, with electric furnace, for pets in New Town

Very soon a much awaited wish of Kolkattans would be fulfilled when they get their first ever crematorium for pets - it is being planned in New Town and would fill a void that forces many pet lovers to bury their pets, animals and birds, in the nearest open space or make a 2-hour drive to the only cemetery in Bakrahat, on Diamond Harbour Road.

The New Town Kolkata Development Authority (NKDA) has already identified a five-cottah plot in Action Area III to set up the crematorium - the plot is close to a canal bank and about a kilometre south of New Town police station. Ar present a cemetery run by an NGO in Bakrahat is the only option for anyone who wants to give his departed pet a semblance of dignity in death. The present practice of many pet owners is to dump the carcass in water bodies or bury them near their homes.
The decision to build a crematorium instead of a cemetery within the city limits was dictated by shortage of space because, while a crematorium can come up on a small piece of land, a cemetery needs a much larger space and capacity and could rapidly become an issue in future.
It is understood that the proposed crematorium will have an electric furnace like the ones at Keoratala and Nimtala apart from a landscaped lawn, a garden with a variety of flowering and ornamental plants and a building housing a photo gallery and message boards for pet owners to paste photographs of their pets and leave messages. A visitors' room along with one for meditation have also been planned.

Three soldiers swam 2,800-Km in 43-days down the Ganga - from Devprayag in Uttarakhand to Ganga Sagar in Bengal - in order to spread awareness about the need to keep the river and its environments clean. The three soldiers are Wing Commander Paramvir Singh, and Sergeants Gulupili Narhari and Sarapilli Srihari. They began their journey on October 8 and swam an average of 65-Km every day with stops at Hardwar, Kanpur, Allahabad, Varanasi and Patna. They finally reached Ganga Sagar on November 19.

In the course of their journey, the trio had met over 30,000 people and explained to them how a clean river would benefit their communities in days to come.
They have observed that the river was most polluted in Kanpur, where pollutants from adjoining chemical factories along the banks dump their waste into the water. The color of the water was red because of effluent and the locals are scared of even taking a dip.
The trio talked with the civic authorities, who assured that they would try to install more treatment plants.
A common sight along the banks was cremation on wooden pyres. During interaction with the locals, they tried to convince them that cremating bodies in electric crematorium would save trees.
The three swimmers were felicitated at a ceremony held at Fort William.

It has been reported in zeenews.india.com dated 6 February 2015 that a total of 61 bodies have been discovered in an abandoned crematorium in Acapulco, in the Mexican state of Guerrero.
It was in the same location from where students had gone missing last year.
The dead bodies came to light after people from the neighboring areas called the authorities who discovered the human remains. Forensic experts are investigating as confirmed by Spanish news agency Efe. All the bodies have been shifted and taken to the local forensic institute.
From preliminary reports it has emerged that one of the bodies belonged to that of a minor and that none of them had been mutilated. All the bodies were covered in lime to prevent stench and none of them had been burned.
It seems the foul smell of decomposing bodies resulted in the shocking discovery. The crematorium, the Cremaciones El Pacifico, had been abandoned about a year ago.
Incidentally, Acapulco is located 200-Km from Iguala, where 43 students from a teachers college had gone missing after they were rounded up by corrupt local police who then handed them over to a crime cartel. The students were subsequently murdered and their bodies were burned at a landfill site in neighboring Cocula.
