Uma Bharti wants dam construction in Ganga to stop

#namamiganga #narendramodi #umabharti Prime Minister Narendra Modi has given responsibility of cleaning the Ganga to Union water resources minister Uma Bharti but, there appears to be a clash of interest brewing because, in the opinion of Uma Bharti, constructing new dams would hamper the cleaning of the Ganga.
This has been reported in timesofindia.indiatimes.com dated 24 June 2015.
Hinting that her concerns were the hydro-power projects, she has asked different ministries including environment and power to have a cautious approach while allowing construction of any new dam on the river.
There are six contentious hydro power projects in Uttarakhand which could severely affect the ecological flow of the Ganga. Environmentalists have already asked for scrapping such projects that could lead to another June, 2013-like disaster in the region.
Uma Bharti has urged the environment and power ministers to consider alternate proposals like solar energy instead if constructing dams to generate hydro-electricity in Uttarakhand. She has also agreed to pay compensation of Rs 20,000-crores from the ‘Namami Ganga’ funds to the companies\stakeholders if they decide to scrap these projects.

Namami Gange faces hurdles in Kanpur – clean-up of the Ganga needs experts of IITs

#NarendraModi #UmaBharti #Namamigange #IITRoorkee Clean-up of the Ganga to give it the looks of the Thames or the Danube or the Hudson is a noble intention but, given the Indian culture and mindset, it may take centuries. The National Mission for Clean Ganga (NMCG) has zeroed in on one of the major culprits which is Kanpur.
This has been reported in timesofindia.indiatimes.com dated 22 May 2015.
The effluent that is discharged from this city is enormous - one of the drains is Sisamau Nala which discharges the highest amount of untreated sewage (138 MLD) into the river. And, the worst part is that it passes through heavily populated and congested areas.
Relocating this vast population to make way for a Sewage Treatment Plant STP is a major challenge and, for this, experts of IIT Roorkee are being roped in. The study would take time and, till such time a solution is found, the effluent will continue to be discharged into the Ganga.
Incidentally, till now, an amount of Rs 4,168 crore has been spent in the past 29 years but no result is visible. This project is a special one for Prime Minister Narendra Modi and he has assigned the task to Uma Bharti for close follow-up and implementation. Let us hope that Ganga becomes as clean as the Thames or the Danube or the Hudson and tourists can enjoy a ride and, even commute to and from cities situated on its banks.

Uma Bharti takes stock of Namaami Gange (Ganga Clean-up) on a motorcycle

#namaamigange #ganga #UmaBharti #Haridwar Union Water Resources Minister Uma Bharti has taken a decision to stay of the banks of the Ganga for 3 to 4 days in a week in order to keep a tab on the drains that empty their wastes into the waters of the river.
She has, apparently, taken a tour of the city of Haridwar on a motorbike to acquaint herself with the existing sewage system.
This has been reported in ibnlive.com dated 20 May 2015.
Obviously, she has formed certain ideas on how best to tackle this problem that is unique in the Indian context because the river is a holy river and everyone believes that its waters ae pure irrespective of its level of pollution.
The Modi government is celebrating its one-year in office and Namaami Gange (Ganga Clean-up mission) is close to his heart. He has assigned this task to Uma Bharti and she has admitted that the first year was devoted to making financial provisions and lengthy paperwork.
She is now entering the second part of the exercise – she will come out of her official chamber and spend at least 3-4 days a week on the banks of the Ganga. She wants to find out what actually flows into the river.
This work, in her estimate, will go on till October 2016. During this time, she would be checking the drains on the banks of the river to see what flows into the Ganga to make it dirty.
She has not yet decided on what her plans are beyond October 2016.
