Cable cars stranded over Mont Blanc - 45 tourists had to spend the night suspended in air

A total of 110 people were trapped in the cabins as they rode the Vallee Blanche Cable Car at about 4.30pm on Thursday. The Vallee Blanche Cable Car connects the renowned Aiguille du Midi mountain in the Mont Blanc with the Pointe Helbronner.
The crews managed to bring 80 of them to safety before darkness and bad weather set in and around 45 of them had to spend the night stranded in the cable cars over Mont Blanc. They were rescued in the morning. The problem happened because of tangled cable wires.
This has been reported in news.sky.com dated 9 September 2016.
Most of the tourists were airlifted out of the cable cars by helicopter and those closest to the ground climbed down with the help of rescuers. However, 45 other holidaymakers, including a 10-year-old child, had to remain suspended at an altitude of 3,800m (12,500ft) in the Alps overnight after the rescue operation was suspended. The authorities took full care of them and provided them with water, food and survival blankets to help them contend with the chilly conditions. First aid workers also stayed inside the cabins to reassure the passengers throughout the night.
Early next morning, the passengers were brought back to the French city of Chamonix and the town of Courmayeur in Italy.
Incidentally, the cable car ride offers close-up views of Western Europe's tallest mountains, apart from the steep glaciers and valleys found below. Each cabin carries four passengers, and the 5km ride normally lasts for 30 to 35 minutes.
