Pollution takes its toll on China - smog forces Beijing under 'red alert'

#beijingsmog #china #pollution Pollution has taken its toll on Beijing and it was compelled to issue its first-ever red alert for smog and urged schools to close and introduced restrictions on factories and traffic - as a result, half of the city's vehicles would go off the roads.
This red alert is the most serious warning on a four-tier system that had been adopted a little over two years ago and it means that the authorities have forecast more than three consecutive days of severe smog.
This has been reported in nzherald.co.nz dated 8 December 2015.
The World Health Organization has designated the safe level for the tiny, poisonous particles at 25. Against this, in Beijing, the readings of PM2.5 particles climbed toward 300 micrograms per cubic meter on Monday. This is expected to keep increasing before the air begins to improve with the arrival of a cold front. AS indicated in an online notice from the Beijing Municipal Environmental Protection Bureau - the 'red alert' has been issued to "protect public health and reduce levels of heavy air pollution.
As a result, people have to wear a mask when going outdoors at all times.
Convenience stores were doing a brisk business selling air filtering face masks.
