This may come as a surprise but, beggars with kids in arms who knock on your car window pane at crossings to solicit your sympathy and tug at your heart strings usually make use of rented kids. The kids are very seldom blood relatives.
This has been reported in timesofindia.indiatimes.com dated 8 December 2015.
This has been observed in the roads of Bengaluru and the kids are taken on hire from other mothers in exchange of money. The kids are even kept sedated.
These have been revealed by NGOs who are working on this issue. It seems in Bengaluru, some migrant women seeking alms at busy traffic intersections had hired children from their acquaintances for Rs 100. At times the kids are kidnapped from other locations.
SOS Children's Village of India, an NGO, have rescued 53 children this year from Bengaluru's roads. Many had been rented by women but no proper investigation has been done into this aspect.
Incidentally, when such a girl was found at a busy traffic intersections she admitted, during interaction, that the child in her arms was in fact her sister's. When asked why the child was sleeping, she replied that it was not well due to bad weather and was under medication.
The girl was a minor and pregnant herself.
