Mayor of Carmel city's tips for Kolkata

James Brainard, the six-time mayor of Carmel city in Indiana, US, is on an official visit to India and was stuck in a traffic jam at Park Circus for almost 15 minutes while he was on his way to the US consulate on JL Nehru Road from Salt Lake. It was a distance of 15-Km and the stranding cost him a break he had wanted to take before attending a fair at the consulate. The fair was part of the US government's campaign to create awareness about climate change.

Because of the traffic jam, he offered a few tips to the concerned authorities. He had observed that the city was very chaotic... too many cars as well as people on the road.
His Carmel is a suburban city in Hamilton County of Indiana and is spread over 207sq km with a population that stood at 86,000 in the 2013 census, up from the 25,000 recorded 20 years ago. In contrast, while Kolkata was spread over an area of about 200sq km, its estimated population was 4.573 crore as per 2011 census.
In spite of that, he felt that if some simple things like keeping pavements free of obstruction could be maintained, it would prevent people from getting on to the road and, as a result, block the vehicular traffic.
However, his suggestions have not fund favor with the local Mayors. The mayor of Salt Lake commented that he respected his ideas but it would not be feasible to implement in Salt Lake. The mayor of Kolkata was more brunt. The ideas cannot be implemented that easily in Calcutta which has a population almost 100 times more than Carmel city.
