Diabetes is a widely read and discussed subject and a report in timesofindia.indiatimes.com dated 4 April 2015 reveals the advantages for going in for five types of food that are good for those who suffer from this disease.
The five foods suggested are dates, milk, flaxseeds, sage and beans – these are five food items that can play a crucial role in taking care of diabetes.
Dates – these are a bit sticky fruit with a sweet taste and rich in fiber. It is considered to be a diabetes-friendly snack because dates are rich in antioxidants when compared against grapes, oranges, broccoli and peppers. The specialists suggest to take raw dates with walnuts.
Milk – this, as we all know, is one of the best sources of calcium and Vitamin D apart from being blood sugar-friendly. Milk products like cottage cheese and low-fat yogurt are also good for diabetic people. Milk in your cereal for breakfast helps as does cottage cheese as a snack.
Flaxseeds – this is a good source of fiber and alpha-linolenic acid. The body converts these to omega-3. It is believed that flaxseed lowers not only blood sugar but also cholesterol. Hence, the risk of heart disease, heart attack, and other cardiovascular issues are reduced. Flaxseeds can be taken with oatmeal for breakfast or with paneer.
Sage – this is a type of herb that boosts the secretion of insulin and helps to curb blood sugar in pre-diabetic stages while managing it in Type 2 diabetics. Moreover, it helps in liver functions which, in turn, improves immunity of the body. A German study has found that consuming this herb sage on an empty stomach can reduce the blood glucose levels. It can also be added to your tea.
Beans – these as we all now are high in fiber content and help to steady blood sugar, and even lower cholesterol. Beans burn body fat because they contain calcium. Can be taken in the form of a bean and sprout salad or in your soup.
