The whole country went gaga over the visit and there were smiling faces everywhere till Obama’s parting shot at Siri Fort. In his speech, President Obama made a statement that sounded the death knoll – he said ‘… Nowhere is it going to be more necessary to uphold (religious faith) than in India. India will succeed so long as it is not splintered on religious lines …."
Once he returned to Washington, Obama once again highlighted the situation in India that appeared to be bothering him – he said Gandhi would be "shocked" at the state of the country he had helped liberate.
This has been reported in timesofindia.indiatimes.com dated 11 February 2015.
He spoke against the backdrop of unwanted happenings in different pockets and statements of some persons and even actions taken by some groups.
A few hardliners began to queer the pitch by making utterances that did not go down well with the people with newly coined words like "ramzaade-haramzade". There also started a program called ghar wapsi in which people from other faiths were rounded up and their religions changed. There were rumors of incentives being promised.
And then there were incidents of vandalizing of churches and of insistence that all Hindu women must bear at least four children each!!
This is not the way to live in a civilized world and, its effect has been felt by Modi & Company through the #AAPsweep – the people of Delhi have shown them the door and proved that every pride has a fall. And – a clear message has been given: never take the people for granted. They should not be treated with contempt because they have the power to dislodge governments from power.
