Reports indicate that the camel went berserk when Mark Mere entered the pen, which also held two females, to tackle a water trough of frozen water. The owner Mrs McNair tried to close the gate to the pen but the camel did not spare her either and she was also trampled.
Information is that the animal was agitated because he was ready for breeding.
The owner Peggye McNair was a former bank executive and had been engaged raising camels for nearly two decades – she would, at times, welcome children at her camel ranch.
The authorities have been given permission to put down the animal.
It is not the first time a camel has killed a wildlife sanctuary owner because, last October, a camel had trampled, kicked and bit the owner to death at a farm in Tulum, Mexico.
