Child traffickers rope in 8-year-old boys to beg at stations, bus stands

Begging is rampant all over India and they can be seen in not only outside temples but also at railway stations, bus stops. Very few of them are genuine beggars who have no other means of livelihood but, a majority of them belong to organized rackets of exploitation.
A gang with Bangladeshi and Indian members involved in trafficking girls is believed to be pushing the boys -as young as eight years - into organized begging rackets. These usually operate from railway stations, bus depots and long-distance trains.
This has been reported in timesofindia.indiatimes.com dated 14 December 2015.
The Railway Police of Katihar rescued 14 children who had gone "missing" from Malda's Harischandrapur recently. The children had been hired for anything between Rs 2000-4000 per month and the money was being sent to their parents. When children go missing and are kidnapped, they usually land up in the nets of the child traffickers and the girls are pushed into the flesh trade.
Moreover, both boys and girls are also inducted into the begging trade - people have pity on them and give them money which ultimately goes into the pockets of the racketeers.

Beggars prey on our sympathies with child in arms

Beggars with kids in arms usually tug at your heart strings by using rented kids as bait.
This may come as a surprise but, beggars with kids in arms who knock on your car window pane at crossings to solicit your sympathy and tug at your heart strings usually make use of rented kids. The kids are very seldom blood relatives.
This has been reported in timesofindia.indiatimes.com dated 8 December 2015.
This has been observed in the roads of Bengaluru and the kids are taken on hire from other mothers in exchange of money. The kids are even kept sedated.
These have been revealed by NGOs who are working on this issue. It seems in Bengaluru, some migrant women seeking alms at busy traffic intersections had hired children from their acquaintances for Rs 100. At times the kids are kidnapped from other locations.
SOS Children's Village of India, an NGO, have rescued 53 children this year from Bengaluru's roads. Many had been rented by women but no proper investigation has been done into this aspect.
Incidentally, when such a girl was found at a busy traffic intersections she admitted, during interaction, that the child in her arms was in fact her sister's. When asked why the child was sleeping, she replied that it was not well due to bad weather and was under medication.
The girl was a minor and pregnant herself.

Kerala bans beggars and lottery ticket sellers from its temples

Kerala has taken a bold step to ban beggars and lottery ticket sellers from entering temples and the ban extends to begging and selling of lottery tickets in temples and its surroundings in the state. This is based on a suo moto cognisance by a division bench of the Kerala High Court who have issued the order due to the growing menace of begging in and around various temples in the state, especially at the famous hill shrine of Sabarimala. In this temple, beggars from neighboring states come in hordes during pilgrimage season.
This has been reported in zeenews.india.com dated 26 November 2015.
The bench has said the the prohibition should be strictly implemented in all temples, including 'Sabarimala sannidhanam', Pamba and other major shrines under Travancore and Cochin Devaswom boards.
Similar ban has been imposed on sale of lottery tickets inside temple compounds and any violation should be brought to the notice of the police.

Art of begging - Chinese style

China is a unique country where beggars are of the high-flying type and have perfected the art of begging. They flaunt costly wristwatches and latest iPhones and fly from one place to another when not begging. However, when the funds are low, they don the garb of beggars by wearing ragged clothes and dishing out hard luck stories.
The police have arrested four "professional beggars" from southwest China's Chongqing Municipality.
It seems they were pretending to be penniless migrant workers, unable to return home.
As per the police, the four disguised themselves as beggars before going on a "cheating tour" around the country. Last month, they had taken a fight to Chongqing to "collect money" to prepare for Spring Festival — Chinese New Year — which falls on February 19. Till date, each of them has raised around $130 and all of them own costly wristwatches and iPhones. Moreover, one of them owns an iPhone 6 Plus.
A recent survey carried out among over 20,000 respondents has revealed that 82.3% of them are of the opinion that begging as cheating.
Of course, India also has its share of rich beggars. In 2012, in Ajmer, a beggar died with nearly Rs 2 lakh (about US$4,000) in his pockets. He used to beg at the dargah. He had come to Ajmer nearly three years ago and had no friends and he died from various ailments that may have been treated with the money that he had.

Children’s Day – do children really matter

Children’s Day is celebrated in India on the occasion of the birthday of Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru, the first Prime Minister of the country – he was fond of children, hence the tribute to him. It was celebrated for the first time in 1954 and has continued. On this occasion, children hog the limelight but, only those who matter – in fact, while schools join in the celebrations and cities take this opportunity to promote various events focused to better the lot of the children, no one bothers about the multitude of neglected children. At times, a handful of them are selected from slums to provide photo ops for people who matter.
Just imagine children who have never tasted the joys of childhood – they toil in menial jobs to earn morsels of food. They are there in hotels and restaurants as dish washers and waiters, they are there in firecracker factories, they beg on the streets, they turn rag pickers and drug peddlers. Many of the have been born on the streets, many have been driven to the streets due to poverty, many have been discarded at birth.
There is no dearth of Fagins in this world – they control the huge empire of beggars. They engage children and, do not hesitate to even maim them to earn the sympathy of passersby. Many of them can be seen in temples and religious places and they not just beg but also steal items like purses, handbags, and mobile phones.
During annual Haj, beggars go to Mecca – it seems they earn thousands by begging from pilgrims who go for the holy Haj. The situation in the firecrackers factories in Andhra Pradesh is pathetic – they employ child labor and children as young as five who are known to mix sodium and nitrate with their own hands. Accidents are quite common and the deaths have no effect on the practice of using child labor because it comes cheap. Moreover, full families work together so that they earn a decent sum for survival.
Another section of children go to work as domestic helps – while many of them remain in their own neighborhoods, others venture out to other distant cities. Many of them land in trouble either at their place of work or get hijacked into prostitution. An example is that of a 15-yeat-old girl of Jharkhand – she worked as a domestic help in a Vasant Kunj home and was very badly injured and rescued by a joint team of an NGO and police. The police have arrested a 50-year-old woman who works at a private company in Noida and who had inflicted the injuries. She has been charged with assault and illegal confinement.
And then, of course, there is the rampant sexual exploitation of children – they fall easy prey to the evil minded and are forced into such relationships because of the need to survive. Those who are born on the streets need to have a roof above their heads and what better option than to team up with another person. The relationships are fragile but, so are relationships in the civilized world! It’s all about existence.

What can a CJ report?

Let the journalists of the mainstream concentrate of political leaders and the movie folks – that opens up the field for the Citizen journalists because there are so many other relevant topics that are crying out for attention. The Citizen Journalist is free to report on any subject that pleases him – it could be any irritant of his neighborhood or on everyday happenings that have a bearing on how we live and how we have to continuously fend off troubles and fears. Some examples will help to understand the philosophy behind what defines a citizen journalist of a high order.

Corruption is thee in all walks of life – practical applications of how the corrupt operate is an aspect that can be highlighted – for example catching a corrupt person red handed when he is accepting illegal gratification –

Or – show to others how the local corporator neglects his territory – the unhealthy surroundings, heaps of uncleared garbage, stray dogs, beggars, the bad condition of roads, the taps that run dry, lack of bus shelters … the list could be a very long one.

Then there are special drives to capture the sad plight of children in juvenile homes and senior citizens in homes for elders. There is a gulf of difference between what they advertise and what they actually give. The CJs could zero in on such subjects that people want to know about.
