Wakeup call for Society – girls as young as six are worried about their bodies

Researchers from Leeds Beckett University has carried out a study on the growing up girls and had asked 301 under-nines questions regarding their attitude to food and how happy they were with their bodies.
This has been reported in dailymail.co.uk dated 7 May 2015.
It is shocking to learn that girls as young as six are going on diets and, even though they have just started primary school, the children are already unhappy with their bodies and are trying to lose weight.
Eating disorders and the way these girls worry about their weight when they should enjoy the most carefree part of their lives is a matter of concern.
These raises questions about the attitude of schools towards obesity and anorexia. The child measurement program is one such. It involves children being weighed and measured in school according to their BMI. This has been criticized by parents of children as young as four who have received letters telling them their child must go on a diet.

Beauty contests in Chivilcoy banned because these contests attract violence

#Chivilcoy #beautycontests #argentina The town of Chivilcoy, in the Buenos Aires region of Argentina has become the first in the country to ban beauty queen competitions. In the opinion of the town council of Chivilcoy, these beauty contests were sexist in nature and encouraged violence against women. Moreover, such competitions gave encouragement an obsession with physical beauty and brought about illnesses like bulimia and anorexia.
In Latin America the beauty pageant often serves as a springboard for a career in television or entertainment and several television personalities of Latin America have won major beauty competitions and along with it, have earned celebrity status apart from lucrative careers.
The decision of the council is that henceforth the festivities in Chivilcoy would be celebrated by recognizing the achievements of young people and the beauty contests would be replaced with carnival mask competitions and prizes for volunteering.
It seems a debate is raging in Argentina for a long time about the validity of beauty competitions. Mariano Anton of Argentina's anti-discrimination watchdog, the National Institute against Discrimination and Xenophobia, has demanded that beauty competitions in schools be scrapped in order to prevent attacks on participants. In his opinion, there have been many instances of violence against young participants in various provinces – the main reason was their beauty and because "they were too beautiful".
