Beauty contests in Chivilcoy banned because these contests attract violence

#Chivilcoy #beautycontests #argentina The town of Chivilcoy, in the Buenos Aires region of Argentina has become the first in the country to ban beauty queen competitions. In the opinion of the town council of Chivilcoy, these beauty contests were sexist in nature and encouraged violence against women. Moreover, such competitions gave encouragement an obsession with physical beauty and brought about illnesses like bulimia and anorexia.
In Latin America the beauty pageant often serves as a springboard for a career in television or entertainment and several television personalities of Latin America have won major beauty competitions and along with it, have earned celebrity status apart from lucrative careers.
The decision of the council is that henceforth the festivities in Chivilcoy would be celebrated by recognizing the achievements of young people and the beauty contests would be replaced with carnival mask competitions and prizes for volunteering.
It seems a debate is raging in Argentina for a long time about the validity of beauty competitions. Mariano Anton of Argentina's anti-discrimination watchdog, the National Institute against Discrimination and Xenophobia, has demanded that beauty competitions in schools be scrapped in order to prevent attacks on participants. In his opinion, there have been many instances of violence against young participants in various provinces – the main reason was their beauty and because "they were too beautiful".
