Water crisis for Delhi due to rise in ammonia levels in the Yamuna River


Delhi is faced with a crisis of water because of the sudden rise in ammonia levels in the Yamuna River. The water supply was hit in several parts of the national capital. The sudden rise in ammonia levels in Yamuna river ultimately affected operations at the Wazirabad and Chandrawal water treatment plants.

As informed by a senior Delhi Jal Board (DJB) official, due to the sudden rise in the ammonia level in the Yamuna, supply at Wazirabad pond and production at Wazirabad and Chandrawal plants has been stopped. Therefore, there will be no supply of water till the morning of February 16 to residents in the NDMC area and in north, north- west and central Delhi along with parts of west and south Delhi.
As a result, the areas affected would be Chandni Chowk, Jama Masjid, Civil Lines, Subhash Park, Mukherjee Nagar, Shakti Nagar, Adarsh Nagar, Model Town, Jahangir Puri, Wazirpur Industrial area, Punjabi Bagh, Gulabi Bagh, Hindu Rao hospital area, Jhandewalan, Motia Khan, Pahar Ganj, Karol Bagh, Old Rajinder Nagar, Naya Bazar, East and West Patel Nagar, Malka Ganj and adjoining areas.
The ammonia pollution is because of pollutants entering the river through the Panipat drain and the matter has been taken up with authorities in Haryana.
