Tea is the secret of good, strong and healthy bones


#cardiachealth #InternationalOsteoporosisFoundation #osteoporosis Tea is not just a cup that cheers but, research has revealed that it is the secret of good, strong and healthy bones because those who drink tea have stronger bones which reduces their risk of painful fractures, including broken hips. Just three cups of tea a day is linked with a 30 per cent lower risk of breaks.

The Australian researchers have concluded that the effect is so big that tea could become a ‘major addition to the dietary prevention of fracture’. Incidentally, as per estimates of the International Osteoporosis Foundation, there are more than 200 million people worldwide have the disease of osteoporosis and, in the US and Europe, the figure is nearly 30 per cent of postmenopausal women. Moreover, at least 40 per cent of these women and up to 30 per cent of men usually suffer a fracture in their lifetime as a result.
The researchers were from Flinders University, South Australia, and they kept track of the health of almost 1,200 elderly women for ten years. These women, all volunteers, had an average age of 80 at the start of the study. They were regularly quizzed about their diet, with special emphasis on the amount of tea they drank.
During the decade, these women suffered 288 breaks, including 129 hip fractures. But, those who drank at least three cups of tea a day were almost a third less likely to break a bone over the decade when compared to those who rarely or never consumed the stuff.
One of the reasons for this could be that plant chemicals called flavonoids strengthen the bones by speeding the building of new bone cells at the same time slowing down the erosion of existing ones. Found in fruit and vegetables, Flavonoids are found in fruit and vegetables and are good for the cardiac health and, it is a known fact that a healthy heart is good for the bones.

Sunshine means Vitamin D – good for health in measured dose

This is because Vitamin D is available in only a few foods like fatty fish and mushrooms. Hence, sunlight is important for our health because we get most of Vitamin D from sunlight. Insufficient exposure to the sun, or pigmentation of the skin (which diminishes the production of vitamin D precursors), usually gives rise to low levels of Vitamin D.
Of course, one needs to ensure that excess may be harmful because of the presence of the UV rays. Sunlight consists of two types of solar radiation UVA and UVB. The former results in reddening and burning of the skin, while the latter increases the production of an inactive form or precursor of vitamin D by the skin. This, in turn, is activated by the liver and kidneys.
Moreover, both UVA and UVB increase the risk of skin cancer. This could take the form of the most deadly type of cancer called melanoma.
Hence, one must invariably take a balanced approach to sunlight exposure.
Incidentally, deficiency of vitamin D deficiency could give rise to complications like low bone density, broken bones due to osteoporosis, muscle weakness, diabetes, multiple sclerosis, cardiovascular disease, colon cancer with fears of premature death.
