Custodial death of a black youth triggers protests in Batimore

This was the case of a black detainee who died in police custody. The detainee was 25-year-old Freddie Gray and he died on 19 April from spinal injuries. The incident happened a week after he had been arrested for carrying a knife.

Protesters resorted to smashing shop windows and hurling objects at officers as the biggest protest yet over the death of a young black police detainee turned violent. The 2000-strong crowd joined a peaceful 90-minute rally at Baltimore city hall. They demanded justice for the death and the mood of the crowd subsequently turned ugly as some of the groups spread out across the city and went on the rampage.
The protesters smashed store windows, looted merchandise and vandalized police cars.
Mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake expressed disappointment at the violence which, in her opinion, was the handiwork of "a small group of agitators". The speakers at the rally wanted President Barack Obama to launch a national inquiry into police misconduct.
It may be recalled that last year there were weeks of protests after an unarmed black teen Michael Brown was shot dead in Ferguson, Missouri, and Eric Garner, a black man in New York City, died after he was placed in a chokehold during an attempted arrest.

The black-white divide in the US grows - another black shot dead in Brooklyn

It is now another black 28-year-old Akai Gurley, who was shot dead by the police when they opened fire in an apartment building in Brooklyn.
Akai Gurley has a two-year-old daughter.
Protesters took to the streets and engaged in violence with the police in which several persons, including policemen, were injured and vehicles were damaged. The protesters hurled bricks, rocks and pipes at the police, who fired tear gas and smoke canisters to quell the crowds.
In the melee, a number of officers were injured and buildings and cars were vandalized or looted.
The shooting of Akai Gurley comes after the shooting of 18-year-old black teenager Michael Brown in Ferguson on 9 August and the shooting of Eric Garner, a father of six, who was killed in July in a chokehold by the New York police. Neither of the involved policemen have been indicted by the Grand Jury.
Earlier, another unarmed black teenager Trayvon Martin had been shot and killed by a neighborhood watch volunteer, a white officer, in Sanford, Florida in 2012 and, in that case also, the killer was released by the court.
