Taiwan struck by Typhoon Megi, third typhoon in two weeks

Taiwan faced its third typhoon in the form Typhoon Megi in two weeks. Thousands have been evacuated, schools and offices are closed across the island and a total of 575 international and domestic flights were cancelled as of Tuesday morning with 109 delayed. Most trains were also halted.

More than 5,000 people have been evacuated from their homes and a total of nearly 2,000 are housed in shelters, as revealed by the Central Emergency Operation Center. In addition, about 36,000 households have lost power due to the typhoon so far.
Before the typhoon struck, more than 3,700 tourists had already been evacuated at the weekend from Orchid Island and Green Island - both are popular with visitors. Moreover, Hualien and Taitung, which are also popular tourist destinations because of their coastlines and landscapes, are expected to also be in the firing line.
Incidentally, these areas are still trying to recover from damage brought by Super Typhoon Meranti earlier this month - that was the strongest storm for 21 years to hit Taiwan.

Typhoon 'Meranti' leaves behind at least 28 dead in China as the country gets ready to face typhoon 'Malakas'

The death toll has increased to 28 in the destruction caused by 'Meranti', the world's strongest typhoon this year in China and the country is now bracing itself to face another powerful typhoon 'Malakas' for which an orange alert has been issued.

Death of 28 people with 15 others still missing have been reported when 'Meranti' struck eastern Chinese provinces of Fujian and Zhejiang province two days ago. 'Meranti' was the strongest typhoon this year and it made landfall in Xiamen City, Fujian with a maximum 17-grade wind force and brought with it extraordinary rainstorms.
The typhoon paralyzed several cities in the south of the province, including Xiamen, Quanzhou and Zhangzhou and the direct economic losses in Fujian were over 16.9 billion yuan (about USD 2.6 billion).
Forecasting authorities have now issued an orange alert for waves and storms, as typhoon 'Malakas' moved to the east coast of China. This is the 16th typhoon in 2016 and it has already entered the southern part of the East China Sea. The typhoon is expected to whip up waves from seven to 12 meters-high off Taiwan's east coast, southern and central parts of the East China Sea, and the nearby Diaoyu Islands. In addition, waves up to 4.4 meters-high are also expected in the coastal regions of Zhejiang and Fujian provinces. The coastal regions in Fujian and Zhejiang could experience storms and rain and residents and ships operating in related waters have been advised to stay clear of those areas.

Typhoon Meranti set to strike Taiwan - nearly 1800 tourists evacuated

Taiwan is bracing itself for the approaching super typhoon Meranti and nearly 1,800 tourists have been evacuated from offshore islands like Green Island and Orchid Island which are popular tourist destinations. Some schools and offices have also been closed down as a precautionary measure.

AS per forecast of the Central Weather Bureau, typhoon Meranti is expected to skirt past the island`s southern tip resulting in torrential rain and powerful winds. It is maintaining its strength and speed, and its impact will be the strongest on Wednesday and early Thursday.
Meranti, the super typhoon, would dampen celebrations and disrupt traffic during the four-day Mid-autumn Festival holiday period - it is a major holiday in Taiwan, Hong Kong and China. Authorities have suspended ferry services to the two destinations Green Island and Orchid Island. Offices and schools were shut down in Orchid Island from Tuesday afternoon and the defense ministry had ordered around 33,000 soldiers to be on standby.
Incidentally, three people were killed and hundreds were injured when super typhoon Nepartak had pounded Taiwan in July with the strongest winds in over a century.
