India wastes 67-million tonne of food every year

A government study has revealed that India wastes up to 67 million tonne of food every year. This amount is more than the national output of countries like Britain and enough to feed one of country's larger states for a whole year.
This has been reported in zeenews.india.com dated 15 September 2016.
The value of the food lost is Rs 92,000 crore and this amount works out to nearly two-thirds of what it costs the government to feed 600 million poor people with subsidized ration under the National Food Security program. Incidentally, one million tonne of onions vanish on their way from farms to markets while 2.2 million tonne tomatoes also vanish and five million eggs crack or go bad due to lack of cold storage.
It is for the agencies to take necessary corrective action so that wastage is minimized - the study recommends on-farm training and investment in cold-storage facilities.

Attendance in Anganwadis improve with introduction of eggs in midday meal menu

Anganwadis are schools where the poorest of the poor children go and, since their attendance is irregular, the authorities have come up with an innovative idea - it is to include eggs in their midday meals. And, it has been seen that attendance at 6,000 anganwadis across three districts has shot up manifold since the first week of May. Eggs have been introduced in food distributed among children between 3 and 6 years.
This has been reported in telegraphindia.com dated 22 May 2016.
The project has been launched by the state woman and child development department in Ranchi, Dumka and East Singhbhum districts on a pilot basis - eggs are provided thrice a week to ensure proper nutrition for underprivileged children. This has had a positive effect because the attraction of eggs has helped improve attendance.
In East Singhbhum, a total of 48,087 children are getting eggs on every Monday, Wednesday and Friday at as many as 1,722 anganwadis. Similarly, in Dumka, 2,060 anganwadis are distributing eggs thrice a week among 62,355 beneficiaries while 2,827 such grassroots centres are fulfilling the nutrition needs of 75,394 kids in Ranchi.
As explained by a health expert - an egg is almost a full meal for a young child. Except Vitamin C, it has all the essential nutrients.
THe eggs are being supplied by a firm of Tamil Nadu - it charges are Rs 4.48 per piece and the charges include packaging, taxes, transportation etc. The firm has to supply the eggs directly to anganwadis located in remote areas.
