Bihar to go in for egg production in a big way to meet the shortfall of eggs

Under a new plan, Bihar will go in for production of eggs on a large scale - these eggs will generate both money and employment in the state. The daily requirement of eggs in the state was 2.8 crore and it was producing only 10 lakh eggs per day. Obviously, there is a large scope to tap this market.
More than 2000 people from eight districts have shown interest. They are from Siwan, Gopalganj, Bhojpur, Buxar and have submitted applications to the Centre for Incubation and Entrepreneurship of Bihar Vidyapeeth to avail of assistance in developing an egg production unit.

Bihar is dependent on Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu for eggs and plans to make good the shortfall by producing them in the state itself. The eggs that are procured are kept in cold storages which makes them not as good as fresh eggs.
As per plans, entrepreneurs have to invest Rs 10-12 lakh to start the unit and the balance would be in the form of loans - this can be up to 90 per cent of the investment.

India wastes 67-million tonne of food every year

A government study has revealed that India wastes up to 67 million tonne of food every year. This amount is more than the national output of countries like Britain and enough to feed one of country's larger states for a whole year.

The value of the food lost is Rs 92,000 crore and this amount works out to nearly two-thirds of what it costs the government to feed 600 million poor people with subsidized ration under the National Food Security program. Incidentally, one million tonne of onions vanish on their way from farms to markets while 2.2 million tonne tomatoes also vanish and five million eggs crack or go bad due to lack of cold storage.
It is for the agencies to take necessary corrective action so that wastage is minimized - the study recommends on-farm training and investment in cold-storage facilities.

Low production of potato in UP and Bengal has improved profits for Gujarat

Potato farmers have had a windfall because of low production of potatoes in other states like UP and West Bengal. The potato farmers in Gujarat are getting better prices for their produce. As compared to the price of Rs5-6 per kg in 2015, local farmers are currently fetching Rs10 per kg in the wholesale markets basically due to lower production in other states.

There has been a decline in production of the two top potato growing states namely, Uttar Pradesh and West Bengal. The shortfall is of the order of 5% and 15% attributable to unfavorable weather conditions. Of course, the yield in Gujarat, too, has dipped by 10% this year, but, unlike other major states, Gujarat has managed to registered an increase in production on account of higher acreage. The potato output has, in fact, galloped substantially over the last two years.
At present, the production in an area of one lakh hectare was around 35 lakh tonnes as against 31 lakh tonnes of 2015 and 23 lakh tonnes in 2014.
Moreover, the cold storage capacity in Gujarat saw addition of approximately 6.25 lakh tonnes (1.25 crore bags of 50 kg each) and, therefore, farmers in Gujarat are able to reap the benefits. The wholesale prices had plummeted to Rs 5-6 per kg in Gujarat last year due to glut in the market but the prices have remained at Rs 10-13 per kg in 2016 which is a big relief.
