This has been reported in zeenews.india.com dated 13 January 2016.
The researchers had collated 56 previous research studies to examine the effect of smaller plates on consumption and observed that smaller plates reduce consumption for a wide variety of conditions: food type, plate-type, portion-size and setting.
They found that halving the plate size led to a 30 per cent reduction in amount of food consumed on average. In the case of plates if its diameter is reduced by 30 per cent, it results in halving the area of the plate and thereby reduces consumption by 30 per cent.
Another observation was that smaller plates reduce consumption best if the diners are self-serving their portions. Or - if diners are invited to serve themselves and are provided with smaller plates, they serve themselves less and by extension, eat less. In other words, simply switching over to smaller size plates can help curb overeating among individuals in situations where they serve themselves, for example, at the home dinner table or at a buffet.
