Beach polo of Bhavnagar Polo Club to start in Gujarat from March

Gujarat would be starting beach polo from March next year when the first ever beach polo tournament in the state will be held at Kuda-Hathab, located some 20-Km from Bhavnagar. That way, the 'sport of the kings' will arrive on the Gujarat beaches.

It will be organized by the Bhavnagar Polo Club (BPC) who are affiliated to the Indian Polo Association (IPA), the apex body of the game in the country.

Bhavnagar Polo Club has organized a 25-Km endurance race at Kuda-Hathab to check whether the sandy surface and the natural terrain is suitable for the beach polo tournament. Ten players participated in the endurance race with Kathiyawadi horses and the horses were also comfortable on the sand.
It is expected that around eight to nine teams from across the country will take part in the tournament. This can boost the tourism potential locked in Kuda-Hathab sea stretch. In 2011, BPC had successfully organized national Polo tournament in Bhavnagar where who's who of the game attended the tournament.
Members of the IPA have also visited the beach and found it apt for the beach polo. A flat, broad and long beach at Kuda is having hardened sand which is suited for polo.
