In the opinion of Maneka Gandhi said, the elephant like the tiger must be treated with the highest degree of legal protection. But because of government inattention, the animals are languishing. Many of them are tortured and found begging in temples.
Incidentally, the Asian elephant is included in Schedule I of the Wildlife Protection Act 1972 which means that technically it has the highest degree of legal protection. However, no one rescues these poor mistreated animals because government has not built any rescue and rehabilitation centres for this species.
On a rough estimate - the cost for keeping an elephant is also about Rs 50,000 to 60,000 per month in terms of medical care, feed and rehabilitation. This works out to about Rs 7 lakh per elephant per year.
The infrastructure necessary to house each elephant also costs Rs 15-20 lakh for protected contact enclosures, ponds, covered shelters, enrichment structures and elephant keepers.
The cost for creating such infrastructure and housing facilities for 50 elephants is about Rs 10 crore and the recurring costs for these animals would be Rs 3.5 crore per year.
Hence her call to Bollywood artistes to extend help for a noble cause.
