This has been reported in timesofindia.indiatimes.com dated 18 September 2015.
The center should take this as a wake-up call and fix weaknesses in the Swatchh Bharat initiative.
The online poll on "local circles" had more than 3 lakh participants and the message is clear – the municipalities need a big technology and skill upgrade and also improve actual delivery of sanitation services at the ground level. The poll also indicates that citizens should be involved in the cleanliness drives as well as in advocacy – such measures could pay dividends.
The bottom line is that cleanliness should be drilled into the minds of Indians – littering the streets with paan and tobacco juice is a habit that is second nature to Indians when they are in India. They do not commit such despicable activities when abroad. Such activities should be made punishable offences and spot fines should be levied on those who spit on the roads or litter the streets.
