Deposits of oil and gas discovered in the Falklands

#falkland #argentina #CristinaFernandez #oilandgas #LasMalvinas Deposits of oil and gas have been discovered at a well off the Falkland Islands by two British companies – the discoveries have been made after a nine-month drilling campaign. This has been revealed in news.sky.com dated 2 April 2015.
The two British companies are Premier Oil Plc and Falkland Oil and Gas Ltd and, as per their statements, the find at the Zebedee well was better than expected. At the well, they have found 24.6 metres of net-oil bearing reservoir and 16.7 metres of net gas-bearing reservoir. Given the state of instability on the Middle East which is home to most of the oil producing nations, it would be prudent for other countries to try and become self reliant in oil.
This well was the first of six wells which constitute the Sea Lion drilling campaign that had started in March by Rockhopper and the two companies.
This well will now be plugged and abandoned as a successful exploration well and the drilling rig will be moved to the Isobel Deep well in the southern part of the North Falkland Basin. The results from the second well would be known by the end of April.
The discovery of oil and gas could lead to heightened tensions between the UK and Argentina over the sovereignty of the Falkland Islands, known as Las Malvinas in South America. Cristina Fernandez, the President of Argentina would be addressing a ceremony to mark the 33rd anniversary of the invasion of the Falkland Islands.
It may be recalled that the Falklands War between Argentina and Britain had ended on 14 June 1982 and the number of casualties were 255 British service personnel and 649 Argentine military personnel. Moreover, three people living on the islands were also killed.
