China bans burqa in public in Urumqi

China has banned wearing of burqas in Urumqi – this has been done by legislators in the capital of China's restive far-western Xinjiang province. As per the law that has been passed, residents are prohibited from wearing burqas in public. This is an example that highlights the government's continued campaign against religious extremism.
The ordinance name suggests it targets outer garments that cover someone's full body including the face, which goes by the name of burqa in some Islamic traditions.
In the month of August, another city in Xinjiang had imposed bans on people wearing Islamic-style clothing and large beards from riding public buses during a provincial sporting event. The authorities of Karamay city had targeted veils, large beards, as well as three types of Islamic dresses -- including those with the star and crescent symbol.
At the time, dozens of bus stations in the city were reported to be manned by security personnel who had to conduct checks and report any violations to the police.
