This has been announced by e UK defense secretary Michael Fallon – he has announced that he intends to end the army’s ban on women serving in frontline infantry roles and, a final decision on this would be subject to research into the long-term impact on women of infantry training. However, he expected that the ban would be lifted “over the next year or so”.
He has also added that women can fight just as effectively as men and the army selection should not be on the basis of gender but, henceforth, should be done on the basis of ability. Of course, Fallon has denied that the training regimes would be made less tough for women.
He has pointed out that women were already deployed on the frontline of the air force and police and there are women flying fighter bombers at the moment over Iraq. Women should not be excluded for any role and it would not be right to restrict the options available in the army for women.
These announcement have come after a government-commissioned review recommended that close combat roles should be opened to women, subject to further research into physiological demands.
