India wastes 67-million tonne of food every year

A government study has revealed that India wastes up to 67 million tonne of food every year. This amount is more than the national output of countries like Britain and enough to feed one of country's larger states for a whole year.

The value of the food lost is Rs 92,000 crore and this amount works out to nearly two-thirds of what it costs the government to feed 600 million poor people with subsidized ration under the National Food Security program. Incidentally, one million tonne of onions vanish on their way from farms to markets while 2.2 million tonne tomatoes also vanish and five million eggs crack or go bad due to lack of cold storage.
It is for the agencies to take necessary corrective action so that wastage is minimized - the study recommends on-farm training and investment in cold-storage facilities.

Unplanned production of vegetables in Karnataka and Maharashtra have resulted in over production and a correspondingly steep fall of prices in Chennai. The price of onions came down to Rs 17 while tomatoes from Bengaluru were selling at Rs 12 per kilogram and the local variety for just Rs 8 per kilogram.

In some areas of the city, tomatoes were selling at Rs 5 per kilogram. As one vendor said - since these are perishable items, he sold them for Rs 5 to avoid wastage.
The Koyambedu vegatable market saw 300 trucks from Karnataka bringing in tomatoes while the same number of trucks brought in onions from Maharashtra. Obviously, the prices could fall still further with the increased supplies.
