Stampede in a football stadium in Angola killed at least 17 fans

It was a major tragedy when there was a stampede in a football stadium in north Angola in which at least 17 fans were killed and another 56 injured and admitted in the hospital. Many of the dead are children and some of the injured are serious. The tragedy happened in the town of Uige during a match between Santa Rita de Cassia and Recreativo de Libolo - the match was a part of Angola's domestic league season.
It seems there was a blockage at the entrance to the stadium and many of the dead were either trampled to death or died from suffocation.
This has been reported in thestatesman.com dated 11 February 2017.
It seems outside fans were trying to enter the stadium and one of the gates probably gave way due to the pressure of the crowd. This caused the people to fall and get trampled on by the crowd. It is a tragedy without precedent in the history of Angolan football.
Angola is ranked 148 in the FIFA world rankings and is a minor power in African football.
