The state of Nagaland was formally inaugurated on December 1, 1963 and Kohima was declared the state capital.
The hornbill festival is the coming together of all the elements that make up the total Nagaland and is a collaborative celebration of all Naga tribes at one venue.
This has been reported in thestatesman.com dated 1 December 2016.
The festival is a tribute to the great hornbill - it is the most admired and revered bird for the Nagas because of its qualities of alertness and grandeur. The bird is closely identified with the social and cultural life of the Nagas and that is reflected in tribal folklore, dances and songs. The awe and admiration for the bird is also symbolically displayed on almost all tribal traditional headgears that is worn during the festivals and is indicative of the unity of the Nagas.
The event is a unique platform for tourists to witness the cultural diversity not only of the Nagas but also of the seven other sister states of the Northeastern region.
