This has been reported in dailymail.co.uk dated 15 December 2016.
The drone was launched from a mechanized track in its Prime Air Fulfillment Centre in Cambridge- it soared to a height of 400ft to deliver the package. A new private trial is expected to deliver packages up to five pounds in weight in 30 minutes or less by making use of drones.
There are questions regarding safe use of drones in view of several near-misses involving commercial aircraft and amateur drone pilots. To overcome such problems, Amazon would use its drones in 'segregated blocks of airspace below 500 feet and away from most manned aviation operations'. Moreover, its drones will use 'sense and avoid' technology and data will be continuously gathered throughout the trial to make improvements, calling safety its 'top priority'.
At present, the trial was allowed to operate during daylight hours where wind speeds are low and visibility is good - it is nit permitted in rain, snow or icy conditions.
