Sharpshooters to eliminate hundreds of white-tailed deer in Maryland this December

Sharpshooters will be deputed to eliminate hundreds of white-tailed deer at two Civil War battlefields in Maryland this December. This multi-year program is aimed at curbing damage to forests and plants as revealed by the National Park Service.
The plan is to kill 243 deer at Antietam National Battlefield and 278 at Monocacy National Battlefield from December through March. The program was approved in 2014. The reason is that, in these parks, the deer population densities are more than 10 times greater than the commonly accepted sustainable density of 15 to 20 per square mile. The deer meat will be donated to food banks.
This has been reported in foxnews.com dated 5 October 2016.
The removing of deer is the tool to allow healthy forests. The parks will be closed periodically from December through March to enable the sharpshooters to safely work. Incidentally, hunting is prohibited in the parks.
Government sharpshooters have already killed nearly 1,200 deer in Catoctin Mountain Park in Maryland, starting in November - the program had begun in early 2010 and has produced more than 15 tons of venison for food banks.
