India ranked 97 out of 118 countries in the 2016 Global Hunger Index (GHI)

A new report on hunger has revealed that one in three children in India has stunted growth and 15% of the country's population are undernourished. The 2016 Global Hunger Index (GHI) has ranked India 97 among 118 countries and it also indicates that 38.7% of Indian children under five years are stunted due to lack of food.
This index ranks countries based on undernourishment, child mortality, child wasting (low weight for height) and child stunting (low height for age).
This has been reported in zeenews.india.com dated 12 October 2016.
This report by the International Food Policy Research Institute (IFPRI) has ranked India's neighbors better - China (29), Nepal (72), Myanmar (75), Sri Lanka (84) and Bangladesh (90). Only, Pakistan (107) is lower down the ladder when compared to India.
Hunger levels are "alarming" in seven countries, with Central African Republic (CAR), Chad and Zambia experiencing the worst levels. Haiti is reeling from last week's Hurricane Matthew and is still recovering from a massive 2010 earthquake - it has the fourth highest hunger score. In addition, the report states that another 43 countries, including India, Nigeria and Indonesia, have "serious" hunger levels.
