Restrictions to be imposed on number visitors to the Taj Mahal

In order to reduce the burden of visitors on the Taj Mahal, steps are being initiated to restrict the number of visitors inside the 17th century monument at any given time as also their duration of stay. This is being done by National Environmental Engineering Research Institute (NEERI) under the directives of the ASI. The number of days in a year when crowds surge at Taj have been continuously increasing every year: there were 13, 20 and 21 such days in 2012, 2013 and 2014.
This has been reported in timesofindia.indiatimes.com dated 6 September 2016.
The draft report prepared by NEERI has suggested that that at no point of time there should be more than 9,000 tourists inside the monument, while the hourly entry rate should be 6,000 tourists. Moreover, the duration of stay inside the premises should be limited to one-and-a-half hours.
These recommendations are to be implemented only on weekends and on special days such as festivals and long holidays because, on other days, things are manageable.
The maximum footfalls are recorded on Saturdays and Sundays and, most Indian tourists visit during April when school exams get over, followed by August, November and December. Foreign tourists avoid summers and preferred to visit in February, April and November-December period.
Another proposed restriction is that the maximum number of tourists inside the mausoleum at any time should not exceed 350 and entry to the Taj should be closed after 5:30 pm every day and 5 pm during peak days - this is to check last minute rush of tourists.
