Rejuvenate the lakes of Bengaluru - bring back the birds

Bengaluru is known as the Garden City and also used to have a number of lakes. But, these have gradually deteriorated into sewage pits. The 30.5-acre Kundalahalli lake in the heart of Whitefield is surrounded by IT parks and, the lake is now home to as much sewage as water. It is now an eyesore. Locals say that at one point, the lake was home to 30 species of birds.
This has been reported in thehindu.com dated 22 September 2016.
Another lake in Mahadevapura lake - the 28-acre lake off Outer Ring Road has been dredged but has yet to reach its potential as a recreational spot for the neighborhood. The lake is surrounded by large apartment complexes and is bang in the middle of one of the fastest growing suburbs of the city.
Then the tanks that were once critical for fishing communities. The Varthur lake had spawned an entire community that earned its livelihood through the fish found in the waterbody but, today, no one engages in fishing. Even the African Catla, a foreign species that is supposed to resist pollution, has started to die.
And, once upon a time, Lalbagh lake would get over 600 Garganey ducks during winters - they have vanished. In fact, in lakes across the city, the population of water bird has declined by more than 80 per cent. The presence of birds indicates the health of lake and, birdwatchers have suggested planting at least 115 species of fruiting and nectar tree species across the city to increase the population of birds.
