In the opinion of experts, the ideal weight of a school bag should be ten per cent of the weight of the child. One of the suggestions of CBSE is to do away with hard-bound textbooks. The textbooks for classes I-VIII, apart from their academic worth, should be light in weight.
Moreover, schools should exhort students to abide strictly by the timetable and inform them about the adverse effects of fatigue caused due to heavy bags on their day-to-day performance in class. Schools have also been advised to redesign their weekly timetable so that minimum number of textbooks and workbooks are required each day.
The ill-effects on the student can be fatigue, muscle pain, shoulder pain, back pain and, in extreme cases, the distortion of spinal chord or shoulder.
Another advise is that students should repack their bags on a daily basis and avoid carrying unnecessary articles, textbooks and workbooks. And - CBSE has also asked schools to encourage teachers to use alternative methods of teaching based on information and computer technology. That would reduce the dependency on textbooks.
