The joint director, Directorate of Census (Madhya Pradesh), has confirmed that these are exact field data from enumerators who had gone house-to-house to collect and record information as given to them.
This has been reported in timesofindia.indiatimes.com dated 13 September 2016.
The Office of the Registrar General and Census Commissioner of India is unable to explain the legal basis of categorizing underage individuals as 'divorcees' when child marriage itself is unlawful. Obviously, the data that has been collected is proof that child marriage remains fairly common.
The statewide breakdown of minor divorces (that is people whose marriage ended before adulthood) - Maharashtrais on top of the list with 1,984. Next comes Uttar Pradesh 1,875 followed by Gujarat 1,638, West Bengal 1,286 and Bihar 801.
Interestingly, Rajasthan, which is considered to be the child marriage capital of the country, has just 366 such cases. It can be said that child marriages in Rajasthan are more stable and do not face divorces.
