Daldykan River turns red near the Arctic city of Norilsk

The water of the Daldykan River near the Arctic city of Norilsk has suddenly turned red and, this is being attributed to spillage from some pipeline because the river runs close to a nickel-producing factory. The Russian authorities have already ordered an investigation into the possible pipeline break after the river turned bright red.
This has been reported in thehindu.com dated 8 September 2016.
As revealed in the social media, the river had changed color in June also and it has been suggested by a few users that iron ore in the ground had changed the river’s color. Others have said that industrial waste was a more likely reason because the river runs near to the Nadezhda metallurgical factory that is run by Norilsk Nickel, the world’s leading producer of nickel and palladium.
Russia’s natural resources and environment ministry has indicated that it was investigating complaints of unknown chemical pollution that could possibly have been caused by a “break in a Norilsk Nickel slurry pipe”. The Norilsk mayor’s office have confirmed that the city’s water supply is not dependent on water of this river but came from other sources.
